Fabiano Sarra, Spada Chair Michaela Stone, Bucket Bag Adrian Ferrazzutti, Star Burst Table August 20 – 24 August 27 – 31 September 10 – 28 Introduction to Rhino & the CNC Alternative Woodworking: Studio Intensive: bending the line wearable wood Adrian Ferrazzutti Fabiano Sarra Michaela Stone I II Join us in this week-long workshop as we explore the fundamental applications of the Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) router. Students learn the process of drawing and preparing digital models in Rhino3D and outputting them on a CNC with the use of computer-aided machining software or CAM. Students complete short exercises throughout the week as they learn to adapt the process to their personal studio practices. Although we use wood as our primary material in the exercises, this course is open to artists and craftspeople in all disciplines. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students learn Rhino3D modeling software to design 2-D and 3-D models for output on the CNC. Each student learns the process of generating a tool path with CAM software and to run their tool path on our CNC machine. Other course content is tailored to address individual project ideas and goals. ACTIVITIES: Demonstrations and one-on-one assistance are given in conjunction with morning and afternoon exercises in using the CNC and a variety of software. We explore the basics of the software programs, however each student is required to have a basic understanding of how to use computers. FACULTY: Fabiano Sarra is a furniture designer and maker from Rochester, N.Y. He was a past Studio Coordinator for Furniture Design and Woodworking at Anderson Ranch and is currently working toward his M.F.A. in furniture design at Rochester Institute of Technology. CONCEPT: www.fabianosarra.com O Expand the design possibilities of wood by transforming it into fabric. This unique, multi-faceted course explores techniques of combining wood with leather and other textiles in order to create unique fashion accessories. Students design in three dimensions through rapid prototyping exercises while learning basic woodworking and leatherworking skills. After design experiments and technique practice samples, students create a final, one-of-a-kind piece. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: We combine hand tools and machines for both woodworking and leatherworking. The course begins with prototyping in inexpensive materials like paper and poster board, and then focuses on combining veneer and leather through hand cutting, hand stitching and machine stitching. ACTIVITIES: Through daily demonstrations and quick design prototypes we cover woodworking basics like cutting veneer, making templates using the bandsaw and sanders, and applying finish. We also review leather/ textile techniques, including cutting patterns, hand stitching, machine stitching, riveting, edge treatments and finishing. FACULTY: Michaela Crie Stone lives in Rockport, Maine, where she creates objects that blur the lines between art, craft and design. Working predominantly in wood, she combines traditional craftsmanship with an innovative aesthetic. Michaela’s furniture, sculpture and handbags have been shown nationally, and received numerous accolades, including grants from the Maine Arts Commission and the Furniture Society, the Artist Award from the Society of Arts and Crafts in Boston and several esteemed artist residencies throughout the country. CONCEPT: II III IV CONCEPT: Master how to bend wood to create dynamic furniture or pure sculpture, and add depth and develop new dimensions and possibilities in your furniture making. We explore basic to advanced techniques to bend wood, including bent laminations, steam bending, vacuum forming and coopering. Students are encouraged to use one or a combination of these techniques to inspire and create a furniture design such as a coffee table, stool, a wall mirror or an entirely sculptural concept. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: We work in solid lumber, plywoods and veneers to create curved components that can be used to make a project of one’s choice. A balance of hand and power tools skills are used, including milling parts, fabricating bending forms, cutting joinery to final assembly and finish. ACTIVITIES: The workshop is action-packed with demonstrations on various bending techniques. Students are encouraged to bring design ideas for their project. Design and aesthetics are considered and discussed. The majority of the class focuses on work time with group and individual demonstrations. FACULTY: Adrian Ferrazzutti is a studio furniture maker working in Guelph, Ontario. He is a 1998 graduate of the College of the Redwoods where he studied under James Krenov. Adrian writes for Fine Woodworking Magazine and produced the DVD Veneered Boxes with a Twist. Adrian teaches at schools in Canada and the U.S. www.ferrazzuttifurniture.com www.michaelacstone.com TUITION $975 | TUITION + STUDIO SUPPORT DONATION $1,175 REGISTRATION FEE $45 CODE W1221-18 | | STUDIO FEE $100 ENROLLMENT LIMIT 10 TUITION $975 | TUITION + STUDIO SUPPORT DONATION $1,175 REGISTRATION FEE $45 CODE W1323-18 66  andersonranch.org  970/923-3181  [email protected] | | STUDIO FEE $100 ENROLLMENT LIMIT 12 TUITION $1,475 | TUITION + STUDIO SUPPORT DONATION $2,075 REGISTRATION FEE $45 | STUDIO FEE $225 CODE W1526-18 | ENROLLMENT LIMIT 10
