Take your furniture making craft to a new
level of elegance and intrigue. Wood veneer has been
around for over 6,000 years. This ancient craft was
created from the finest wood, and with consistency
in figure, grain and color, it maximizes a tree’s harvest,
making its use ecologically responsible. By adding
imaginative marquetry and inlays, students can accent
their work with wood, metal, stone, iridescent shell and
even glow-in-the-dark phosphorus. In this course, we
combine the beauty of wood veneer with artistic vision
to create a remarkable table.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: We learn how to work with
veneer, from flattening to repair to a variety of seaming
methods using a myriad of tools and techniques. We
practice curved panels, waterfall edges, various inlay and
marquetry methods, and compound forms.
ACTIVITIES: This course is geared toward students’
interests and skill levels with daily demonstrations,
lectures and plenty of hands-on practice. We review
a wide variety of approaches for each method, and
students have the opportunity to find their favorites
with each process. Participants create an exquisite side
tabletop with plenty of sample boards.
FACULTY: Scott Grove is a self-taught seasoned
woodworker known for layers of artistic expression and
unconventional techniques. His work has been shown
internationally and featured on HGTV. He has written for
Fine Woodworking, FDM, Woodworkers West, and more,
and authored two books for Schiffer Publishing. Scott’s
work is innovative, unique and creative, and his teaching
style is entertaining, informative and high energy.

CONCEPT:
CONCEPT: Learn how to transform an idea into a
sculpted wood figure in this comprehensive introductory
course. You are guided through the process from idea
generation to carving and finishing techniques. We each
begin by generating a list of character traits that are then
transcribed into a single wooden figure. You learn how to
convey persona by using gesture, proportion, texture and
symbolism, all resulting in a personalized, meaningful 16”
basswood figure.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students learn from a variety
of carving and finishing technique demonstrations for
the creation of a 16” basswood figure. We learn how to
lay out a scale drawing, rough out the figure using wood
power tools, carve using chisels and rasps and, finally,
discover finishing techniques and display.
ACTIVITIES: The workshop consists of daily
demonstrations to guide participants through the entire
process. Individualized instruction is a large component
of this course because each figure is slightly different.
Presentations on the wooden figure in art are also
integrated into the course to serve as a resource for
inspiration.
FACULTY: Santiago Cal lives and works in Lincoln,
Neb., where he is an associate professor of sculpture
at the University of Nebraska. He received his M.F.A.
in sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University.
Santiago has been exhibiting his work nationally and
internationally since 2000.

O
Grasp the basics of woodworking by
designing and constructing a table in a workshop
that explores how wood can be used as a medium for
creative expression. Methods for preparing, connecting
and shaping solid wood furniture elements are covered
while we view the work of contemporary furniture artists
as inspiration. Broaden your skills and knowledge by
learning the fundamentals of furniture making through
the exploration of methods for creating functional and
unique pieces.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Working with solid lumber,
students become familiar with a wid e variety of hand and
power tools as well as heavy woodworking machinery.
With a focus on connecting parts using mortise and
tenon joinery, we discuss ways to personalize a design by
adding shape, color and texture.
ACTIVITIES: Daily demonstrations cover sketching,
model making, and creating a sample mortise and tenon
joint. We learn from slide presentations and individual
work time used to build a table of your design.
FACULTY: Karen Ernst is a professor in the art
department at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania,
where she teaches woodworking and furniture design.
She received her M.F.A. in furniture design from the
Rhode Island School of Design. The furniture and
sculpture Karen creates has been exhibited and collected
widely across the U.S.
