Shaping It Up : designing furniture Andy Buck
CONCEPT : Investigate construction and form for refining shapes and explore new ideas in designing for furniture making in this engaging week long workshop . We discuss different approaches to design and sources of inspiration while exploring a range of possibilities . This course is an exercise in streamlining the design process to be as efficient and experimental as possible , while never losing sight of functionality . By designing and building a small stool or table , students come away with a better understanding of furniture design , and an excellent foundation for continuing their artistic endeavour .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : While designing and building a stool or small table , students learn the fundamentals of carving and shaping wood . Using power tools and many hand tool techniques , we develop an individual design and learn the necessary steps in shaping , taking rough lumber to a highly refined wooden form .
ACTIVITIES : Daily activities include presentations , design and progress reviews , technical demonstrations , experimentation , and group and individual discussions . Exploration of painting and finishing applications are also covered .
FACULTY : Andy Buck is a furniture maker , sculptor and educator . A professor and program chair for the woodworking and furniture program at the Rochester Institute of Technology , he has also taught at the Oregon College of Art & Craft and given workshops at Anderson Ranch , Haystack , Peter ' s Valley and Penland . His work has been included in exhibitions at the Museum of Art and Design in New York , the Museum of Applied Art in Frankfurt and the Boston Museum of Fine Art .

Alternative Materials : cardboard construction Jason Schneider

CONCEPT : Take a fresh look at an everyday material , and then apply your new perspective to three-dimensional design . Corrugated cardboard has inherent character and beauty . A useful versatility and undulating patterns beckon investigation of the infinite ways this undervalued material can be used . In this workshop we explore the potential of new and recycled cardboard as a material for creating two- and three-dimensional , functional and nonfunctional objects .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We work with cardboard , wood , plaster , cement , paint , fire , water , weight , glue , screws , twist ties , pins and other materials . We explore turning , cutting , laminating and shaping cardboard .
ACTIVITIES : We enjoy lectures , technical demonstrations , slide presentations , plenty of hands-on time and lots of fun .
FACULTY : Jason Schneider is an artist and furniture maker from New Jersey . He received his M . F . A . in furniture design from San Diego State University . For 10 years Jason was the Studio Coordinator of the Furniture Design and Woodworking program at Anderson Ranch . Jason currently teaches furniture design and woodworking at Northern Michigan University .

CONCEPT : In 1960s Los Angeles , the brimming art scene fostered a creative community that operated outside the pressures of New York City , including artists like Ed Ruscha , David Hockney , Bruce Nauman , Judy Chicago , Robert Irwin and John Baldessari . This workshop takes a captivating step back in art history to examine the madcap era in Southern California that cultivated the thriving cultural scene of today , focusing on icons like Andy Warhol , Frank Gehry , the Beach Boys , and Dennis Hopper . We also explore the significant and influential development of the use of collage and assemblage as an alternative to traditional painting or sculpture by taking a look at African American artists like Noah Purifoy and women like Alexis Smith and Betye Saar . Using these and other techniques , the program explores L . A .’ s unique history and the ways in which its artists produced their work .

ACTIVITIES : We meet in Schermer Meeting Hall where students enjoy lectures , discussion and an interactive collage exercise .
FACULTY : Hunter Drohojowska-Philp is art critic for KCRW , 89.9 fm . She is author of Rebels in Paradise : The Los Angeles Art Scene and the 1960s , Sensual Mechanical : The Art of Craig Kauffman and Full Bloom : The Life and Art of Georgia O ’ Keeffe and conducts interviews for the Archives of American Art .
Roy Dowell is Chair of the MFA Fine Arts Program at the Otis College of Art and Design . Solo exhibitions include the Fawbush , Curt Marcus and Lennon / Weinberg Galleries in New York and at the Rosamund Felsen , Margo Leavin and Tif Sigfrids Galleries in Los Angeles and the James Harris Gallery in Seattle .
