Framing the Issue : architectural methods in the woodshop Ted Lott
CONCEPT : Delve into the history and methods of frame construction as a way to make fast , light and strong structures with both sculptural and functional applications . While traditional post and beam architecture has long set the standard in the realm of fine woodworking and homebuilding , many of the architectural structures we inhabit rely on a more recent technique for creating structure — stick frame construction . In this course , design and fabricate your own system of parts , and then use those to build small architecturally-based side tables or sculptures of your own conception .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We design an architectural model through ideas and inspiration . Working with solid lumber , we mill wood on the bandsaw , table saw , jointer and planer . We provide an introduction to mechanical fasteners including screws , nails and various pneumatic tools to understand connections in wood , and we explore painting and finishing techniques .
ACTIVITIES : Throughout the week demonstrations consist of designing , milling and constructing structures based on the stick framing method . Collaborative activities , constructive feedback and individual work time take place throughout the session .
FACULTY : Ted Lott is a studio artist and designer currently living in Cooperstown , N . Y . He received his M . F . A . from the University of Wisconsin , Madison . He has exhibited his work and has been an artist in residence at locations nationally and internationally . Ted received an Emerging Voices Award from the American Craft Council in 2017 .

Sculptural Carving : spoons Julian Watts
O
CONCEPT : Explore the potential of woodcarving by transforming the wooden spoon into an abstract , sculptural object . In this class we discuss the intersection of craft , design and art , and challenge our preconceptions about the role that form and function play in the everyday objects that surround us . Each student designs and carves a sculptural wooden spoon that subverts , exaggerates or illuminates something new about this familiar utensil .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We cover drawing , wood species selection , wood grain , carving with hand tools , bandsaw use , sanding and finishing . We also survey a broad array of spoons and utensils from throughout history , and discuss newer examples of experimental and non-functional design .
ACTIVITIES : Each class is a combination of group discussions and demonstrations of tools and techniques , as well as time for each student to work on-on-one with the instructor to explore individual conceptual and technical problems .
FACULTY : Julian Watts has spent years apprenticing with fine furniture makers in San Francisco . These influences inform his approach to woodcarving , which blurs the line between functionality and sculptural form . Julian ’ s work is represented by BDDW and Patrick Parrish Gallery in New York , and is exhibited internationally .

Simple Cabinet : basic woodworking techniques
Jason Schneider
II III
CONCEPT : Embark on the artistic adventure of cabinetry . In this workshop , we explore the craft of building a small wall-hung cabinet with a hinged door and a drawer . This class is a study of basic construction with a less-is-more aesthetic theme while we make an elegantly crafted cabinet . We learn how how to select parts from solid wood to create a harmonious piece based on natural designs . Master a variety of important skills that can be used in many future furniture making projects .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We work with solid wood , and selecting and preparing wood . We also explore safe milling and machine practices , traditional joinery , use of hand tools and how to set hardware , and provide an overview of making jigs and finishing .
ACTIVITIES : Through discussions , slide lectures and demonstrations , this workshop teaches students wood joinery and techniques used for cabinets and boxes . A presentation about cabinets throughout history provides us with inspiration and knowledge of the integrity of traditional joinery .
