O
Enhance your furniture design with the
addition of pattern, texture and comfort in a workshop
that explores the possibilities of upholstery. Starting
with a basic chair, we strip the layers to discover how
an upholstered piece is constructed. We then reverse
the process, recreating the piece with webbing, springs,
padding and the final embellishment of fabric. Wh ether
your interest lies in adding upholstery to your own frame
designs or renovating existing furniture, you come away
with the knowledge of the basic tools, techniques and
materials of upholstery.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Chairs are torn down to
their basic skeleton. Spring systems are explored, and
foundation materials such as burlap, batting, foam and
Dacron are applied. Bulges are smoothed, bulky areas
eased, and raw edges covered with the unique tools and
materials of the upholsterer’s craft. Bring your own chair
— with the approval of the instructor — or work with the
instructor to have one provided for you.
ACTIVITIES: We begin by measuring, marking and
documenting the tear-down of your chair. Then we review
frame repairs, fabric layout, webbing, springs, padding
and applying fabric. Sewing machine operation and
demonstrations help you solve the challenges of bulk,
bulges and raw edges.
FACULTY: Tina Ortman has owned and operated
Sturdy Stitching Upholstery, which combines her love
of furniture, sewing and restoration, for 25 years. She
learns something new from each piece that comes under
her care. Tina lives and works in Bozeman, Mont.

CONCEPT: Build your confidence and your skillset with a
solid knowledge of basic woodworking techniques in this
hands-on course. Learn important aspects of the craft,
such as safely choosing the right wood, the right tools and
the right joints. Explore the fundamentals of good design
and personal expression in woodworking. Students are
guided through a variety of traditional layout and building
processes while making a small-scale project. Whether
you have no experience in woodworking or you have been
away from the wood shop for a while, you walk away
from this workshop inspired to tackle new challenges.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Working with kiln-dried
lumber, we go over proper use of hand and power tools.
Techniques include necessary joints used in the right
procedure, alternative clamping methods and finishing
applications with paints.
ACTIVITIES: Technical demonstrations and skill-building
exercises help you choose the right joint and the right
wood in the right place, producing the best results.
Hands-on practice builds confidence in the wood shop.
FACULTY: Mark Tan studied furniture design and
woodworking in the crafts and design program at
Sheridan College in Toronto, Ontario. He is the Studio

Explore cold-pressed curved laminations
inspired by the original work at the Bauhaus in Germany
in the 1920s and later efforts at Black Mountain College
in North Carolina. The ability to imagine in woodworking
involves insights, sketches, models and experiments, all
of which we examine in this workshop. Throughout the
course, students start from woodworking fundamentals
to create fair curves in drawings and templates and
understand laminating forms. Ultimately, you work
toward building a step stool or wall shelf.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: We learn the development of
working with curves. Students explore original shapes
and combinations in woodworking to lead creativity in
the larger world. We work in solid wood, veneered panels
and allied materials to complete our forms. Review of
construction techniques and clamping strategies for a
variety of formed surfaces are included.
ACTIVITIES: Daily demonstrations take place, and we
spend part of each day learning new techniques. We also
partake in studio practice and one-on-one consultation.
FACULTY: John Sheridan’s career as a furniture
maker spans 40+ years. Additionally, he is a writer for
Woodwork, an instructor at several San Francisco
colleges, and is the founder of the San Francisco
Woodshop and Grew-Sheridan Studio. John trained as
an apprentice at the Peters Valley Crafts Center and at
the University of the Arts.
