Innovative Monoprinting Methods : blocks , stencils & the laser cutter Lari Gibbons
II III *
CONCEPT : Broaden your printmaking skills to include fun and innovative methods with Anderson Ranch ’ s state-ofthe-art equipment . Using the Fabrication Lab and the Patton Print Shop , we produce unique , one-of-a-kind impressions called monoprints . This exciting workshop examines how laser-cut stencils , blocks and overlays can expand the possibilities of a painterly , playful and multilayered approach to making hand-pulled prints . We move fluidly between digital and analog processes , exploring and learning how each can inform our printmaking process and contribute to a flexible , evolving practice of art making .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students use the Anderson Ranch Fabrication Lab to engrave woodblocks and cut paper stencils that can be combined with hand-drawn matrices and marks in the Print Shop . Students who have a laptop with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator should bring it , along with a flash drive . Those without may use available equipment . Although the instructor demonstrates how to prepare images for digital applications , basic Photoshop skills are necessary .
ACTIVITIES : This workshop features hands-on demonstrations in the Fabrication Lab and Print Shop followed by ample studio time . As the workshop proceeds , we shift from quick exercises to individual projects , combining informal discussion and group feedback with personalized instruction and ongoing technical assistance .

The Artist ’ s Book : text & image Karen Kunc
II III IV
CONCEPT : Turn your printmaking craft into an open book . This hands-on workshop is open to everyone from amateur printmakers to advanced artists who enjoy working with their hands , using tools , testing materials , and being open to evolutionary developments as materials come together . We discover the sequence of printing text and images to compiling them into a unique book form . We also explore the book as an edition and as a unique object , while image making and found sources are translated into meaningful sequences . We use lowtech methods such as woodblocks , monotypes and collagraphs for text and imagery . Concepts for invention and multi-level sensory experience are directed in a collaborative atmosphere .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We use low-tech methods for text printing , including rubber stamping , carving in reverse onto wood , pasting type down onto a collagraph plate , using old wood type and a portable proof press . We then bring it all together in a bound or accordion folded book . Both oil-based and water-based inks are used .
ACTIVITIES : We introduce successive demonstrations of printing and plate making during large blocks of creative time . Mid-workshop , we shift into step-by-step directed bookbinding of specific structures to develop skills and bring projects to completion . The instructor offers image lectures , individual sketch reviews , consultation , ongoing technical assistance and group discussions .

Experimental Monoprints
Karen Lederer
I
CONCEPT : Challenge convention and take chances in this monoprinting workshop that explores the rich intersection between painting and printmaking . The class begins with an investigation into watercolor monoprinting in which students print from watercolor paintings , water-soluble crayon drawings and plastic and paper stencils . We then learn to incorporate oilbased inks to create one-of-a-kind prints that are bold and luminescent . The workshop covers a wide range of techniques from stencil printing to trace monotype . By the end of the course you develop a facility for using both oil-based and water-based materials in the same print and understand the benefits of each .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students use oil-based inks , tube watercolor paints , Stabilo woody crayons , Caran D ’ Ache crayons , pencils , stencils , craft foam and paper to create unique prints . The workshop focuses on incorporating both graphic and painterly elements into each print .
ACTIVITIES : We investigate various techniques through demonstrations , explore both graphic and gestural markmaking , engage avenues of nontraditional methods of printmaking , conduct individual and group discussions , have directed warm-up exercises , and enjoy plenty of open studio time .
FACULTY : Karen Lederer received her M . F . A . from the Rhode Island School of Design . She was an artistin-residence at Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop Program , Lower East Side Printshop and Sharpe- Walentas Studio Program .
