Exploring the Multiple & Transforming Images through Silkscreen
Genevieve Lowe
CONCEPT : Launch your inner artist using screen print as your springboard for ideas in a hands-on workshop that encourages experimentation with the printed image . As a technique , screen printing provides a graphic and creative format that enables the communication of ideas in a fast and effective way . This workshop introduces water based silkscreen as a foundation for sampling and recombining images . Participants are encouraged to explore an archive of visual research , and to create compositions and content through constructing , connecting , layering and reinterpreting images . The goal is to consistently produce prints , thus developing a personalized image bank that can be used and explored in future projects and more traditional print editions .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We explore basic stencil techniques and introduce photographic ( halftone ) techniques . We focus on content and digital image archive collection practices as a way of exploring form and content together . Color experiments , handgenerated imagery and registration are also covered . Demonstrations include basic scanning , Photoshop and digital image preparation .
ACTIVITIES : We begin by looking at screen printing examples , with demonstrations of stencil printing followed by digital image prep and image archive management as well as photo-generated screen print demos . Each day commences with a look at the previous day ’ s work , followed by a demonstration of techniques and ample studio time .
FACULTY : Genevieve Lowe received her M . F . A . from Rhode Island School of Design . Her work examines the cross-section of America ’ s natural and built environments and how we inhabit spaces both physically and conceptually — exploring these ideas through printed works on paper and installation . Genevieve has taught printmaking courses at Colorado College and RISD .

Bridging the Gap : white-line woodcut & CNC
Breanne Trammell
O *
CONCEPT : Combine digital and analog technologies using a CNC router to create unique , multi-color woodblock prints that date back to the inception of the craft . Rooted in the history of Japanese woodblock printmaking , white-line woodcut was popularized in the early 1900s . Instead of using multiple blocks , the whiteline method consists of a single matrix in which the design is inscribed into the block , leaving the drawing in negative relief . Watercolor pigment is brushed onto the remaining areas of the block and the image is handprinted onto paper , resulting in the white lines between the flat areas of color in the printed image , and a truly inviting work of art .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Working from source material , such as photographs or scanned drawings , students use Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator to create line drawings and prepare digital files to be incised in woodblocks using the CNC router . We use non-toxic watercolor pigments to create hand-printed variable editions . Basic Photoshop and Illustrator skills are necessary . Students who have a laptop with Photoshop and Illustrator should bring it , along with a flash drive .
ACTIVITIES : Students work on individual projects as we move fluidly between demonstrations in the Fabrication Lab & Patton Print Shop . You also participate in slide presentations , personal instruction , trouble-shooting and informal group feedback .
FACULTY : Breanne Trammell is a multidisciplinary artist with a background in printmaking . Her work has been widely exhibited and she has been an artist-inresidence at the Women ’ s Studio Workshop , Endless Editions and Ox-Bow School of Art . Breanne received her M . F . A . from the Rhode Island School of Design and is currently an assistant professor of fine arts at the University of Cincinnati .

Color Intaglio with Multiple Plates
Eunkang Koh
I II III
CONCEPT : Explore various ways to add depth to your art by creating different layers , textures and colors using the intaglio process . In addition to plate making , we learn about and experiment with registration , printing using multiple plates , editioning , drying and flattening . Color intaglio printing processes including color mixing , ink modification , multiple plate color layering and the use of chine-collé are introduced and demonstrated . By the end of this workshop , you possess a strong understanding of multiple plate intaglio printing and leave class with a colorful edition of prints containing your own unique imagery .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students learn color intaglio using multiple plates . We cover plate making using ferric chloride to etch copper , image transfer , aquatint , soft ground , tool sharpening , registration , color mixing , paper preparation , inking and printing techniques . Signing and numbering prints are also demonstrated .
ACTIVITIES : This workshop consists of demonstrations , plenty of studio work time , one-on-one instruction from the faculty and group discussions .
FACULTY : Eunkang Koh uses printmaking , book arts , drawing and installation to address social phenomena in our contemporary consumerist society .
