Relief Printing : scratching the surface & diving deeper Amber Heaton
O
CONCEPT : Add true depth to your printmaking in this exciting introductory exploration of relief printing . Relief techniques offer an amazingly wide range of texture building , mark making and compositional strategies that can build both simple and complex images . Carve images and build layers to create intensity and richness with multiple blocks , reduction cutting and color layering . Students gain valuable experience while experimenting with a variety of carving materials that produce different visual effects . We discover and practice several inking techniques that can add complexity and nuances to images , resulting in multifaceted and dynamic relief prints .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students learn the basics of relief carving and printing blocks on an etching press . We explore a variety of materials to use as matrices , including sintra , linoleum and wood . Multi-plate registration , reduction carving and inking techniques are also covered .
ACTIVITIES : Through a combination of hands-on demonstrations , work time in the studio with the instructor , and individual practice with techniques , students gain skills and develop projects . Each new project builds on previous techniques and adds more complexity . Group feedback and discussion help to inform the development of new ideas .
