Chiaroscuro : luminosity of the flesh & form Christian Rex van Minnen
CONCEPT : Discover oil paint ’ s ability to harness light , shade and luminous color through the techniques of the Masters . In this compelling workshop , we experiment with various styles and schools of painting to discover how to mix color with light , creating deep sumptuous darkness , and bright , robust color and form . Using the latest in technology and chemistry in oil paint and medium , students practice a division of labor , learning to develop light , form and color through layering techniques , including toned oil grounds , under-painting , grisaille , dead coloring and glazing . We also experiment with creating form through a reductive , monotype printmaking exercise .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students use contemporary versions of historical painting mediums and techniques to create their own visions , whether figurative or abstract , or anywhere in between . We explore utilization of stenciling and variations on the oil ground . All students are provided a pre-oil primed 18 ″ x 24 ″ panel for their first painting . In addition , we explore a monochromatic , monotype printmaking exercise .
ACTIVITIES : Through demonstrations and discussions , students are guided to develop several canvases or panels that bring their own visions to light using new interpretations of age-old techniques . We spend at least one afternoon working from a live model .
FACULTY : Christian Rex van Minnen is an artist based in Brooklyn , N . Y . His paintings are exhibited worldwide and are included in the permanent collection of the Denver Art Museum . He is represented by Robischon Gallery , Denver , and Gallery Poulsen , Copenhagen .

The Landscape in Watercolor for Beginners

CONCEPT : Explore painting the landscape with the immediacy and luminosity of watercolor . This fun workshop for beginners incorporates a series of exercises in the basics of watercolor focusing on the landscape both in the studio and outside . Using a portable block of watercolor paper , pan of watercolors , water-soluble crayons and a few brushes , we investigate the foundations of the technique by working directly from nature and painting from photographs . Emphasis is on developing the skill to control the soluble paints , using wet and dry techniques , and learning how to work from light to dark to create the delicate tones unique to watercolor .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students learn to use a portable watercolor block of paper , Caran d ’ Ache water-soluble crayons for drawing , pan watercolors and watercolor brushes to create their images . We explore wet-in-wet techniques as well as dry brush mark making . We also explore color mixing and producing tonal qualities .
ACTIVITIES : Demonstrations in color mixing using both transparent and opaque watercolors , watercolor crayons and brush techniques are followed by assisted self-directed sessions . We discuss method and content daily as we start on smaller studies and work up to larger pieces of paper . Emphasis is on experimentation with watercolor while looking at the landscape .
FACULTY : Mae Shore is a painter / printmaker and the director of Cheymore Gallery | Shore Publishing . Her postbaccalaureate degree in printmaking is from MICA . Mae has a twenty-year career as a master printer and has shown her paintings and prints in numerous curated New York City shows .

CONCEPT : Master the elusive art of transferring photographic images and create striking works in this unique workshop , which combines the arts of paint and photography . We cover the basics of working with acrylic paints to establish powerful substrates ( underlying layers ) that enhance your images in remarkable ways . Students learn several approaches to working with paint , including basic adhesion techniques and multiple transfer processes . The transfer processes include but are not be limited to paper and ink jet transparency transfers . Along with painting , you are encouraged to use any combination of mixed media to produce the substrate for your applied images . We experiment with multiple transfers , different ways of applying different media , and reworking the surface to create truly arresting visual work .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We use paint and digital images along with found objects , organic objects and recycled art ( preferably your own ). We encourage you to bring and use your own photographs , or use photos taken during the workshop .
ACTIVITIES : We participate in demonstrations of painting with acrylics , digital imaging and transfer techniques including direct paper and inkjet transparencies . We cover the layering of images , gluing techniques , and the use of different materials to apply the digital image to the painted surface . Image presentations showcase artists using these techniques .
