Dimensional Image Making: Advanced Painting: a praxis Works on Paper: collage & gouache
painting in low relief engaged Liz Ferrill

CONCEPT: Expand picture-making into three dimensions
in this intensive week-long exploration of painting. This
dynamic workshop pushes you to grow your material
vocabulary and examine the possibilities of painting
in low relief — swelling pictures away from the flat
wall. Consulting art history as well as learning through
experimentation, we examine the dynamics between
the painted image, physical texture and sculpted form.
While delving into our own painting projects, we ask how
the corporeal psychology of texture and dimension can
intersect with the visual psychology of color and image.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students work with and
expand their visual language by augmenting it with a
range of sculptural materials. Students may combine oil
or acrylic paint with rubber, clay, textiles, wood, plastic
and found objects.
ACTIVITIES: This workshop combines readings,
slide lectures and discussions about historical and
contemporary painting with instructor-led and self-
directed studio time. Prompts encourage you to discover
new forms for your work to take; we process the results
in individual and group critiques.
FACULTY: Heather Leigh McPherson works in
painting, sculpture and animation. Recent national solo
and group exhibitions include GRIN Providence, Actual
Size L.A., Vox Populi Philadelphia and TSA Chicago. She is
an associate professor of painting at Providence College,
and received her M.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of
Design.

Open your painting practice to new
possibilities in an intensive workshop designed for
experienced painters. We participate in engaging studio
time and focused critiques. Students work on their own
self-directed prompts and projects amidst one-on-one
and group discussions and critiques structured by the
instructor, highlighting color choices, the treatment
of surface and other elements of painting that affect
content. Films, articles and conversations take place in
class to foster discourse and strengthen praxes. Students
are encouraged to bring a digital portfolio of recent work
as a stepping-stone to opening up a dialogue about their
research, modus operandi and craft.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students are encouraged to
work with their own choice of paint such as acrylic, oil,
etc., and/or other media and should bring the materials
needed to make their work to class.
ACTIVITIES: Every day entails discussions and slide
lectures on contemporary art and art history, readings,
ample studio time, one-on-one and group critiques. We
review work you are interested in continuing within your
own practice or you are welcome to start a new body
of work.
FACULTY: Rubens Ghenov was born in São Paulo,
Brazil, and immigrated to the U.S. in 1989. He has
shown nationally in both solo and group exhibitions at
Morgan Lehman Gallery, Geoffrey Young Gallery, TSA
Brooklyn and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Rubens
is an assistant professor of painting and drawing at the
University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

O
CONCEPT: Put your imagination to the test in a fun and
exciting workshop that explores gouache and collage.
Gouache is a magnificent, water-based paint used for
creating rich, opaque and velvety surfaces. In this course,
gouache and collage are merged to generate dynamic and
many-layered works on paper. Pochoir, a hand-stenciling
process, is introduced as a way to build collage-like
surfaces using gouache in an additive method. Students
also explore alternative collage materials as a way to
achieve a richer surface texture and color palette.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students use pochoir
(gouache on paper), collage, adhesives, color mixing,
cutting methods and image layering.
ACTIVITIES: We learn through demonstrations,
individual and group feedback, as well as group
discussion and ample studio time.
FACULTY: Elizabeth Ferrill received her M.F.A. from
the Rhode Island School of Design. She has had solo
exhibitions nationally and internationally, including in:
Aspen, Colo.; Nashville, Tenn.; Omaha, Neb.; New York,
N.Y.; and Berlin, Germany. Liz is the Artistic Advisor and
Chair of the Critical Dialogue Program for Anderson
Ranch.
