Collage is a wonderful and accessible art form that can be mastered by all, from the novice to the accomplished artist. In this exploratory workshop, we merge the expressive activity of making marks and lines informed by observation with the deliberate application of collage materials to create complex and visually engaging works of art. Experimentation is encouraged with an emphasis on composition, color, pattern and the use of collage as a design element. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: We experiment with drawing processes that focus on observation using a variety of materials including graphite, ink, crayons, oil pastels, thread and paint. Students learn an archival collage technique. ACTIVITIES: The first day offers an overview of materials and techniques along with a demonstration of archival collage technique. During the following days, we focus on still life, portraiture and landscape, and explore the narrative use of collage elements. Students receive both individual instruction and participate in group discussions. FACULTY: Lucy Fradkin’s numerous awards include grants from Pollock-Krasner, the Gottlieb Foundation, the Sharpe Foundation and two NYFA Fellowships. She has exhibited at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, the American Academy in Rome and many other national and international venues. She teaches at the Art Students League in New York. CONCEPT: www.lucyfradkin.com IV PORTFOLIO REVIEW REQUIRED CONCEPT: Develop and sustain direction and momentum within the personal studio practice. This week-long workshop places particular emphasis on conceptual strategies, formal connections and the ways in which ideas are cultivated and built upon within each artist’s particular studio parameters. Students gain insight into established contemporary artists’ methods as well as hone their own concept-generating skills through intensive conversation among their peers, independent studio time and one-on-one as well as group studio visits. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students may work in any chosen media. Alternative and/or experimental media are encouraged but not required. Paintings may incorporate or verge on three dimensions. ACTIVITIES: Each day includes a mid-day discussion bookended by independent studio work in the morning and afternoon. Students are expected to maintain a rigorous process in the studio and work toward advancing both critical thinking and technical skills. FACULTY: Linda Geary is the Professor/Chair of Painting at California College of the Arts in San Francisco. Her book, Studio Visit, is a compilation of 100 studio visit conversations with a focus on collage and color, including an essay by poet Norma Cole. Linda is a painter who lives and works in Oakland. O Gain insight and access into the powerful realm of abstraction and how it can be used as a visual tool in this acrylic painting workshop. We delve into the basic visual elements of abstraction through the exploration of pattern, color, composition and fragmentation. Students of all painting levels are encouraged to experiment with surface texture as well as alternative painting materials, and are welcome to incorporate representational elements, such as photographs and figurative painting. These dynamic combinations result in bold and exciting images that use abstraction as a device to interrupt reality and present it in unique and surprising ways. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students work in acrylic on various substrates. Spray paint, glitter, photographs, collage and other materials are also incorporated. ACTIVITIES: Each day consists of demonstrations, one- on-one and group feedback and ample studio time for painting. FACULTY: Rico Gatson received his M.F.A. from Yale University. His work addresses identity politics, the history of race, entertainment and spirituality. He has had solo exhibitions at Pierogi in Brooklyn, Ronald Feldman Fine Arts in New York, Steve Turner Contemporary in Los Angeles and Exit Art in New York.
