Beyond the Brush: material Advanced Studio Critique: research painting & installation Abstraction & the Potential for
Narrative

O
Infuse your work with new and alternative
methods in a workshop that explores ways to make
paintings through the collection and application of
materials in addition to paint. Throughout the course,
we work with found objects, industrial supplies and
other alternative resources that encourage students
to expand their paintings into small-scale installations
or simply facilitate painters to emerge from the wall
and work more three-dimensionally. Surface treatment
considerations, form, object placement and the use of
color are of special consideration in this investigational
and dynamic workshop.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: We begin using a luan panel
and a collection of non-traditional materials. As a starting
point, we explore Richard Serra’s verb list. After the quick
exercise, students find exciting ways to incorporate their
own interests, sensibilities and personal iconography
using the materials of their choice.
ACTIVITIES: After a slide presentation and discussion,
the class transitions to hands-on production. We start
with direct engagement with the panel material and
hand tool use. The rest of the workshop focuses on the
production of a non-traditional painting. We all learn from
each other’s material research and exploration.
FACULTY: Michael Arcega is an interdisciplinary
artist working primarily in sculpture and installation. His
research-based work revolves largely around language
and sociopolitical dynamics. Directly informed by
historic narratives, material significance and geography,
Michael’s subject matter deals with circumstances
where power relations are unbalanced.

PORTFOLIO REVIEW REQUIRED
Engage in critical group dialogues and
individual critiques to hone the fundamental aspects
of your work and deepen your understanding of
contemporary art practice. In this workshop that focuses
on mixed media and installation, you produce studio
work at your own pace, pausing for daily discussion
with the instructor and your peers. Topics are in-depth
and cover a wide-ranging scope, including technique,
concept and approach. Students are expected to work
independently and to set their own studio goals for the
week. We strongly encourage a broad interpretation of
painting for this workshop, and welcome artists working
in installation and incorporating 3-D elements into their
paintings.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students choose their
own media and techniques to create their work in
the studio. This class is also open to painters who are
exploring installation, sculptural elements and broader
interpretations of the medium. Students should come to
class prepared with sketches of ideas and a presentation
of their current work.
ACTIVITIES: We work in the studio throughout the day.
Discussions and studio visits take place on a daily basis.
You are expected to have a rigorous studio practice and
work the entire class time.
FACULTY: Shinique Smith is known for her
monumental painting, sculpture and installation works
of bundled fabric, collage and gestural calligraphic script.
Her work has been featured in exhibitions and collections
of prestigious venues such as the Brooklyn Museum, the
Denver Art Museum, LACMA, MOMA/PS1, MFA Boston,
The Frist Center, the Kemper Museum and the Whitney
Museum, among others.

CONCEPT: Analyze and develop your visual language in
this intense painting workshop. Hone your skills to take
meaningful and concise strides in your practice of abstract
painting. We examine how our visual compositions
have the potential to address political, social and
historical motives within abstraction and narrative form.
Students address the challenge of writing an effective
artist statement of intent as an aide for harmonizing
the symbols contained within visual narrative and the
mysterious realm of abstraction. This workshop is also
perfect for experienced representational painters who
wish to take the leap to incorporating abstraction into
their imagery.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students may choose to
work in acrylic, gouache or oil on canvas, paper, wood or
alternative substrates. Projects commence with drawing
or collage, and mixing media and experimentation are
encouraged.
ACTIVITIES: We engage in slide lectures and discussions
about historical and contemporary painting, readings,
explorations and techniques for gathering imagery,
instructor-led and self-directed painting prompts, ample
studio time, and one-on-one and group critiques.
FACULTY: Clare Rojas earned her M.F.A. from the
School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is the recipient
of a Project Space Residency and Tournesol Award from
Headlands Center for the Arts, Louis Comfort Tiffany
Foundation Grant, Eureka Fellowship Award and Artadia
Award.
