O
CONCEPT : Engage with the past while you immerse yourself in the present in a workshop that focuses on the practice of drawing and painting using sumi ink and brush on paper . We take a contemporary and experimental approach to sumi ink drawing while referencing traditional Asian brush painting and calligraphy . We work from the intersection of historical and contemporary while considering brush marks and lines to be descriptive , meditative , intuitive , narrative , contemplative , introspective and expressive . Participants are encouraged to come with an open mind and experimental spirit — the only expectation is to be present within the process .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We work with sumi ink , a variety of brushes and an array of papers . We carefully examine the nature , properties and interaction of these three materials .
ACTIVITIES : We begin by exploring simple mark making , working from the book The Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting . Each day , we engage in conversations and demonstrations . We work both silently alone and together as a group .
FACULTY : Yoonmi Nam received her M . F . A . from the Rhode Island School of Design . Her work considers cross-cultural experience and a sense of transience through prints , installations and drawings . Yoonmi is an associate professor of art at the University of Kansas in Lawrence , Kan .

CONCEPT : Overcome the challenges that present themselves in your artistic practice , and heighten your craft in this three-year mentored study . MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : You are welcome to use materials of your choice . Typically , students use paint , charcoal or enamel on canvas , but there are no limitations . Feel free to bring works already in progress or start with new work during the workshop . Drying time and size should be considered in relation to shipping .
ACTIVITIES : We primarily focus on studio time , which is then supported by slide presentations , discussions and critiques driven by instructor questions and students ’ paintings . Readings and short daily writing assignments are also part of the course work .

O
CONCEPT : In 1960s Los Angeles , the brimming art scene fostered a creative community that operated outside the pressures of New York City , including artists like Ed Ruscha , David Hockney , Bruce Nauman , Judy Chicago , Robert Irwin and John Baldessari . This workshop takes a captivating step back in art history to examine the madcap era in Southern California that cultivated the thriving cultural scene of today , focusing on icons like Andy Warhol , Frank Gehry , the Beach Boys , and Dennis Hopper . We also explore the significant and influential development of the use of collage and assemblage as an alternative to traditional painting or sculpture by taking a look at African American artists like Noah Purifoy and women like Alexis Smith and Betye Saar . Using these and other techniques , the program explores L . A .’ s unique history and the ways in which its artists produced their work .
