Expand your mixed-media toolbox in this
in-depth, week-long workshop. We combine two-
dimensional mixed-media techniques with personalized
exercises to further develop your studio practice. Our
emphasis is on how to bring studio ideas into focus
through the merging of process and critical thinking.
Students work individually with the support and advice
of the instructor to master demonstrated styles and to
incorporate new media into their own work. We identify
and pursue personal creative direction along with an
introduction to critical dialogue. Students finish the
class with plenty of new skills, materials and ideas for
continuing work beyond the workshop week.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: We use water-based paint,
drawing media, gluing techniques, collage, transfers,
fabric, sewing techniques and more.
ACTIVITIES:
Students engage in technical
demonstrations, exercises, individual work time, group
discussions and one-on-one dialogue with the instructor
to develop ongoing work and build studio work habits.
FACULTY: Teresa Booth Brown studied art at
Bennington College and the Skowhegan School of
Painting and Sculpture. Her work can be found in private
and public collections including Fidelity Investments
Boston, Bennington College, University of Colorado Art
Museum, The State of Colorado (Mesa University Library)
and the U.S. State Department.

Explore the rich tradition of mixed-media
painting in this compelling workshop. Working with a
variety of materials, students examine how to push their
paintings through unexpected combinations of styles,
techniques and surfaces. The mixture of approaches and
media creates interesting results while furthering the
content of your work. Students experiment in collage,
basic printmaking techniques, color pencil, ink and acrylic
to create a distinct voice. We take a look at different
ways of mark making, layering media together to create
surprising imagery that blurs the lines between painting,
drawing and collage. Students can choose to work from
life, photographic sources or imagination.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: We work in a variety of
mediums such as ink, watercolor, acrylic, colored pencil,
printmaking and collage, both on paper and canvas.
ACTIVITIES: Each day focuses on a new material and
technique, adding layers of styles and materials to create
several works throughout the workshop. The primary
focus is on individual studio time, supported by both
group and instructor feedback. Students are introduced
to contemporary artists working with mixed media
through daily slide presentations.
FACULTY: Los Angeles-based artist Amir H. Fallah
received his M.F.A. from the University of California,
Los Angeles in 2005. His artistic oeuvre encompasses
painting, photography, sculpture and installation,
combined with a visual vocabulary that includes collage
and complex patterning. The works present a critical
observation of the deconstruction and appropriation of
portraiture in its various forms.

CONCEPT: Explore the luminous, versatile and limitless
possibilities of encaustic — a wax-based paint — in
combination with photography and mixed media. During
this uniquely engaging workshop, students examine
their own visual vocabulary through small, large or
multi-paneled works. Demonstrations include layering
encaustic over photographs, prints, drawings, collages,
fabric, and transferring images onto an encaustic wax
surface to create intriguing works. Additional topics
include mixing encaustic paint and media, studio safety,
resisting, stenciling and masking, encaustic tools, fusing,
metal leafing, collage and alternative techniques.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Encaustic techniques include
choosing a substrate, encaustic gesso/grounds, gluing
papers and prints, fusing, mixing medium, mixing
encaustic paint from oil paint, dipping prints and papers,
black and white and color xerox type transfers, and
collage techniques. We also cover a wide variety of
surface techniques including layering images, stencils
and masks, incising lines, oil pastels, pigment sticks,
metal leafing, indirect and direct transfers, graphite/
carbon paper, encaustic tools and encaustic monoprints,
and incorporating objects onto the surface of panels.
We use inks, oil paints, gouache, watercolor, etc., in
combination with encaustic. Students are encouraged
to bring alternative porous materials to work on if that
interests them.
ACTIVITIES: The daily schedule includes experimental
and traditional demonstrations of encaustic techniques
and photographic printing. Class time also provides
opportunities for individual and group discussions,
image-based lectures and individual work time.
FACULTY: K Rhynus Cesark received her M.F.A. from
Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston. She
is the Director of the Visual Arts P rogram at Colorado
Mountain College, where she serves as the Assistant
Professor of Art. She is a fellowship recipient from
the Colorado Creative Industries. K exhibits her work
nationally.
