Egg Tempera & Gouache : together forever Christopher Ulivo
CONCEPT : Embark on an in-depth exploration of two great water-based painting media : egg tempera and gouache . Gouache and tempera can look superficially similar , but they cater to very different working styles — one slow , dense and layered , the other quick , spontaneous and malleable . Working concurrently with these paints is a great way to build versatility in established practices , or offer something novel to the less experienced . We make paint from raw pigments , as well as traditional gesso and supports , working on-site and in the studio . Students are encouraged to make many paintings with all content welcome — the stranger , the better .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students work with egg tempera , gouache and traditional gesso grounds as well as make their own paints ( other water-based painting is introduced if time allows ).
ACTIVITIES : We switch between quick and longer-term projects throughout the day . We respond accordingly to varying media : gesso grounds require intermittent attention all day , while gouache paintings can be made on-site in an hour or less . Be prepared to work on multiple paintings concurrently , working on-site and in the studio .
FACULTY : Christopher Ulivo lives and works in Ventura , Calif . He creates dense narrative paintings while being distracted by his role as gallery director for Tiger Strikes Asteroid LA and amateur telescope making . The spirit in Christopher ’ s painting is tempered by sentimentality , ignorance and humor that acknowledges the gulf between history , imagination and reality .

Flow & Fluency : basic oil techniques that set you free
Kimberly Brooks
CONCEPT : Set your artistic exploration free by understanding the architecture that makes up the grounds of a painting , whether you are working figuratively , representationally or abstractly . In this workshop , students with basic oil painting experience are exposed to new approaches for composing , including practical techniques , building different types of grounds , color mixing , how to layer and deconstruct , and when to employ tightness versus looseness . Develop approaches for keeping your art as fresh as possible while simultaneously building the scaffolding to create a cohesive body of work through this engaging exploration of painting .
