Going out to See : plein air painting in the Colorado landscape Gregory Botts
III
CONCEPT : Experience summer in full bloom as you embark on painting outdoors in the Colorado landscape . We practice drawing not only on its own , but as the structure for our plein air paintings . In addition to painting outside , we explore the landscape paintings of Corot , Manet , Cezanne , Van Gogh , Matisse , Picasso , Marsden Hartley , Milton Avery , Fairfield Porter and Richard Diebenkorn . We discuss how Alex Katz has recently put the landscape firmly back into the studio and contemporary painting . Art history and drawing together make a conversation , merging content and a new poetry that we can take back into our studios .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students ambitiously explore the oil painting medium while immersed in the nearby landscape . We discover how to control what can easily become a mess when painting outside .
ACTIVITIES : We engage in daily critiques , and we look at our drawings and books for generating ideas . Our focus is on painting outside with guidance from the instructor . Often the instructor paints along , supplying fresh ideas .
FACULTY : Gregory Botts began painting in the landscape with Fairfield Porter , Jane Freilecher and Paul Georges in the 1970s . He spends half of the year in New Mexico , traveling from New York City , and painting along the way . Recently , Gregory had a show titled Southern
Route at the University of Tennessee . www . gregorybotts . blogspot . com
