SPECIAL OFFER : Consider also attending Beginnings : the nuts and bolts of combining paint and photography the week before this workshop and save 20 % on the tuition for the Beginnings class . ( This offer cannot be combined with any other offers , promotions or scholarships .)
CONCEPT : Expand your photographic endeavor with the help of expert instruction aimed at progressing your journey of making images , whether beginner or advanced . Students have access to their own Mac computers and large-format printers , and we focus on the following processes : different ways of applying paint using water based paints , how to adhere images correctly to their painted panels , and four different transfer techniques — inkjet transparency , paper , contact paper and direct rubbing . Students learn how far they need to push an image to complete it , and how to develop a rigorous editing practice . The course emphasizes investigation , exploration and risk taking through a multi-media approach .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We experiment with different transfers ( inkaid , laser , contact paper , direct rubbing ), gluing and adhesive techniques , and using our own source material while beginning to build an image on our painted surfaces . Photographs and photography are an important part of the process , but only one of many components that go into building a successful image . Lastly , we work at improving editing skills and visual literacy .
ACTIVITIES : We participate in demonstrations of digital imaging and collage techniques , acrylic painting and transfer techniques including direct paper and DASS transfers . We cover the use of transparencies in layering of images , gluing techniques , and the use of different materials to apply the digital image to the painted surface . Image presentations showcase artists using these techniques .
FACULTY : Holly Roberts has exhibited nationally and internationally and published three monographs of her work , including Holly Roberts , Holly Roberts : Works 1989-1999 and Holly Roberts : Works 2000-2009 . www . hollyrobertsstudio . com

Andalucía : The Jewel of Southern Spain
Andrea Wallace & Kari Varner
O
CONCEPT : Join Anderson Ranch Artistic Director Andrea Wallace and photographer Kari Varner for a week of personalized photography instruction as we tour Southern Spain with the nationally recognized tour company Butterfield and Robinson . Andalucía is the intense , passionate and sensuous soul of Spain . Everything about it — its architecture , food , language and music — are unforgettable because they were born out of mixed roots and the collision of cultures . Catholic , Moorish , Jewish , folk and Gypsy worlds swirled together for centuries to create something unique ... something that is , as Federico Garcia Lorca might say , deeply alive .
We embark on daily excursions to explore and photograph the cities of Seville , Córdoba , Ronda , Granada , as well as outings to the natural paradise of Doñana and the UNESCO site of Albaicín , the one-time Moorish quarter of Granada . We strike a balance between daily critiques , fieldwork , discussions , new technical and aesthetic material , and the freedom to explore and photograph the region . This workshop focuses on gaining more creative control of your digital camera , understanding the principles of composition , and moving beyond cliché in photography .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Cell phone cameras to Digital SLR ’ s , laptops .
FACULTY : Andrea Wallace is the Artistic Director of Photography and New Media at Anderson Ranch Arts Center . She received her M . F . A . from the University of Colorado , Boulder . She exhibits nationally and internationally with numerous shows throughout the Americas , Europe , China and the Middle East .
