The Art of Lighting for Portrait
Michael Karsh
II III
CONCEPT : Take your photography to the next level with this immersive exploration of one of its most fundamental elements — light . Whether natural or artificial , light is essential to any great image , and in this course , we look at how it can be used , controlled , altered , and recreated to capture visually engaging images . We establish a clear understanding of lighting theory and its relationship to form , texture and content . We cover tools for measuring , creating and shaping light in both indoor and outdoor situations , using studio and battery powered strobes . The goal is to give the photographer a tool set for using light in any situation , always serving the creative vision .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students use digital SLRs , instudio single light sources , multi-light setups , on-location strobes and natural and available light .
ACTIVITIES : We learn through demonstrations , either in-studio or on location , followed by daily student exercises in the same environment , all catering to personal projects . Photography lectures include examples of different photographic styles with natural and artificial light . Students participate in instructor-led group discussions about student work .
FACULTY : Michael Karsh is a Los Angeles-based portrait photographer specializing in fashion and commercial assignments . He shoots for a variety of fashion houses and commercial clients . Michael teaches select workshops focused on the art of lighting for portrait . www . michaelkarsh . com

Machine Learning for New Media Art
Gene Kogan
II III IV
CONCEPT : Step into the future during this week-long workshop that surveys the application of machine learning to new media art . We engage in a broad overview of emerging techniques for processing multimedia data toward the creation of AI-assisted generative art and interactive installation . Current technical skills and practical resources for implementation are facilitated by distributing a collection of readymade software tools . Students produce novel artworks within the specific contexts they care about during the week . Practical training is supplemented by more theoretical explanation and discussion of critical issues for introducing the field at large .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We learn how to apply classification and regression to image , sound and text data . Some techniques are real-time and interactive , such as webcam image classification and audio clustering and navigation , while others are non-real-time , including procedural algorithms for generative art . Basic computer science skills such as navigating a terminal and deploying cloud computation are also covered .
ACTIVITIES : Daily activities center around tutorials about carrying out simple and advanced tasks from supervised and unsupervised machine learning interspersed with short lectures about the underlying theory . The second half of the class focuses on practice , with students applying small- and medium-sized experiments with the software , and brainstorming larger projects .
FACULTY : Gene Kogan is an artist who is interested in generative systems , artificial intelligence and software for creativity and self-expression . He is a collaborator within numerous open-source software projects , and leads workshops and demonstrations on topics at the intersection of code and art . Gene initiated ml4a , a free book about machine learning for artists , activists and citizen scientists .

The Master Portrait
Catherine Opie & Andrea Wallace
III IV
CONCEPT : Challenge your notions , your photography and yourself in this engaging workshop that asks participants to question the visual language of portraiture . As the group examines the many forms , ideas and histories within portraiture , we have opportunities to question preconceived ideas . Each student creates a series of portraits that best represents and extends their existing photographic practice . The course encourages students to take both a technical and critical approach to image making ranging from studio to environmental portraiture .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students use digital photography , a digital workflow with Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop and digital printmaking techniques .
ACTIVITIES : Each student works on an individual project , either continuing an ongoing body of work or jumping into something new . Through lectures and critique , students question and refine their technical choices and further define their personal visions while considering the photographic portrait .
FACULTY : Catherine Opie is a professor of photography at UCLA . Her work has been exhibited extensively throughout the United States , Europe and Japan including a mid-career survey at the Solomon R . Guggenheim Museum in New York in 2008 . She was a recipient of The Smithsonian ’ s Archives of American Art Medal in 2016 . Catherine ’ s recent and upcoming solo exhibitions include Thomas Dane , London , Regen Projects , Los Angeles and Lehmann Maupin Hong Kong and New York .
