CONCEPT: The digital age has given documentary pho- tographers and photojournalists new ways to tell stories with greater authorship and control. Our focus is how to create a personal documentary project and get it seen. We harness new technologies including iPhones, Instagram, social media and transmedia to be more effective storytellers. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: We learn through presenta- tions, discussions, critiques and editing of work. ACTIVITIES: Each morning begins with a presentation about documentary photography and contemporary practices. Students participate in editing and review ses- sions, group reviews of each student’s portfolio/essays, one-on-one sessions with the instructors to discuss per- sonal projects, and dialogue about career advice or the promoting and publishing of work. FACULTY: Ed Kashi is a photojournalist, filmmaker and educator whose sensitive eye and an intimate relation- ship to his subjects are signatures of his work. He is a member of the VII Photo Agency. This course is ideal for students looking to expand their control animations and processing skills, and those wanting to use a camera as the input source. We work with Sublime Text 3 to edit code and HYPE Framework. Throughout the week, we explore efficient production techniques with a final project of a real-time, camera-driven animation. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students use Sublime Text 3, a sophisticated text editor for code, markup and prose. We also use HYPE Framework, a collection of classes that performs heavy lifting tasks while using a minimal amount of code writing. ACTIVITIES: We work with OpenCV for Processing to bring a physical camera input of interaction in order to allow for control of objects on screen using processing. The instructor presents multiple methods to speed up production, and students participate in hands-on exercises and receive extensive one-on-one help. Our final project is a real-time, camera-driven animation.
