The Directed Image : constructing a meaningful narrative
Jocelyn Lee
II III
CONCEPT : Explore the timely and dramatic world of photojournalism in a workshop that highlights how we make stories with photographs and how the formal and technical language we choose shapes these narratives . From newspaper journalism to extended documentary , magic realism and surrealism , photo storytelling comes in many forms . We delve into how to better articulate storytelling capacities through attention to technical and formal decisions including light , frame , distance from the subject , depth of field , shutter speed and one ’ s relationship to the model . We look at work by portrait and still life photographers , as well as clips from carefully selected narrative films to help us better understand our own visual dialect and hone our personal vision .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students use digital cameras , a digital workflow with Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop and digital printmaking techniques .
ACTIVITIES : We begin with a portfolio review on the first day . Students work on individual projects for the week , either continuing an ongoing body of work or jumping into something new . As a class , we frequently go on location and students are asked to find and supply creative materials , such as models , objects , and props to continue to construct their photographic narratives throughout the week .
FACULTY : Jocelyn Lee has taught at Princeton University since 2003 and received her M . F . A . in photography from the City University of New York at Hunter College . She is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and two MacDowell Colony residencies . Jocelyn ’ s photographs are held in numerous collections , including Yale University Art Gallery , Museum of Fine Arts , Houston , Center for Documentary Studies at Tufts University and Maison Européenne de la Photographie .

MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students use iPhones and select camera apps to capture , edit and catalog images .
ACTIVITIES : We learn through demonstrations of emerging applications for the iPhone and spend the day using our iPhones to capture and edit images .

The Image & the Word : telling your story with photographs & text
Joanne Dugan
O
CONCEPT : Learn the truly powerful art of pairing words and pictures , a craft Theodor Geisel once coined , “... a progeny more interesting than either parent .” In this workshop , students explore the works of master artists who have successfully combined photographs and text , as well as photography books ( both contemporary and rare vintage works ) using image / word juxtapositions . There are visual and writing assignments as well as lively discussions to inspire you to tell your own stories in a new and personal way .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : All digital camera formats may be used , including DSLRs , point-and-shoot cameras and smartphones . Work is shared in class via projector and printed in the media lab . Feedback is individualized so experience at all levels is welcome .
ACTIVITIES : We rely on a combination of lectures , assignments , writing exercises , making , shooting , processing , printing , and discussions . We start with slide presentations , and then explore through individual and group dialogue . Each student works on an individual project — either an ongo ing body of work or discovering new pathways .
FACULTY : Joanne Dugan is a New York City-based photographer and author . Her work has been published in seven books combining image and text , including the best-selling ABC NYC and two fine-art monographs . Joanne is on the faculty of The International Center of Photography and her work is represented at the Marlborough Gallery in New York City .
