Tap into the art of the documentary in a
workshop aimed at teaching professional and semi-
professional photographers a new approach to their
work, one rooted in personal connection and emotional
content. This is an intense, immersive shooting workshop
that pushes students beyond where they’ve gone before.
You are expected to produce an in-depth photographic
essay during the week. The thrust of the workshop is to
help you bring your unique personal voice to your work
and take home a new way of seeing your images and the
world of documentary photography.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students use digital cameras.
The instructor demonstrates off-camera flash techniques
as well as a workflow that includes Photo Mechanic,
Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.
ACTIVITIES: We spend significant time with our
subjects, in addition to daily lectures, demonstrations and
critiques. Group critiques are a true workshop experience
with direct but supportive feedback from the instructor
and fellow students. We emphasize the importance of
learning how to talk about your photographs as well as
the work produced by your peers. Student essays are
screened on the final day of the workshop.
FACULTY: Documentary photographer Danny Wilcox
Frazier focuses his work on marginalized communities
both in and outside of the United States. He has
photographed people struggling to survive the economic
shift that has devastated rural communities throughout
America. He is also the author of the acclaimed book
Driftless, and the director of the Emmy-nominated
documentary of the same title.
