Beyond the Picture Plane
Leah Dyjak
II III
CONCEPT : Think outside the frame in this evocative workshop that encourages students to discover ways the photographic image can extend beyond the traditional picture frame . We employ the use of collage using the scanner , camera and physical surface manipulation of a photograph . Through this process , we explore the edges of our perception with a focus on time , surface , line and play . Conceptually , we explore the line between fiction and reality and infuse new meaning into previously twodimensional images by deconstructing and reconstructing them into a new physical framework .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students use alternative printing methods with image sequencing , layering and image compositing using Adobe Photoshop . Images can be found , taken or constructed to work with a particular idea and focus . From these images , we deconstruct the familiar photographic frame by using digital and physical collage . We insert our new photographic collages into a predetermined site and re-photograph the work in a different context .
ACTIVITIES : Each day we cover a combination of digital tools for collage and layering using Photoshop . We discuss methods for for scanning , direct surface manipulation and site installation . Group demonstrations and instruction are balanced with ample studio time as well as group and individual discussions .
FACULTY : Leah Dyjak is an interdisciplinary , lensbased artist . She received her M . F . A . from the University of Texas at Austin . Her site-specific work combines performance , film and photography , and her images often push the edges of the photographic frame . Leah is an assistant professor of photography and video at Winthrop University .

Hunting & Farming the Photograph
David Hilliard & Andrea Wallace
III
CONCEPT : Explore your photographic motivations in a truly unique workshop . In this course , we look at two categories of photographers : hunters who capture their images as they exist in the world , and farmers who cultivate their photos via staged or constructed strategies . Both camps of image making are valid and wide ranging . Students are guided through a series of exercises in which you are asked to approach a subject or subjects utilizing both hunting and farming practices . Participants are given an overview of histories of each style of image making .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students use digital cameras , a digital workflow with Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop , and digital printmaking techniques .
ACTIVITIES : We participate in daily activities including presentations on artists working within these camps , short field trips , discussions of student work and various related readings . Each participant works on an individual project that allows them to explore their conceptual / formal photographic relationship within the concepts of hunting and farming .
FACULTY : David Hilliard received an M . F . A . from Yale University . He is a regular visiting faculty at Harvard University , the School of the Museum of Fine Arts , Boston , and Massachusetts College of Art & Design .
