Alternative Digital Printing Creating Your Signature Style: Making the Photographic Book
the art of composition, light & color Matthew Monteith
Benjamin Timpson
O
Uncover the endless possibilities of
alternative digital printing, and expand the scope of your
digital printing toolbox. Digital cameras and smartphones
allow us to capture images from the extraordinary to
everyday events. Often those images only live in our
computers or social media websites. In this workshop,
we print onto film and transfer the images to paper,
metal and plexiglass. The result of the week’s work is a
broadened idea of what the digital print can be and an
almost limitless range of possibilities of what individual
imagery can become.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students explore direct
printing and image transfers onto paper, metal, wood,
plastics and fabric, and use Adobe Photoshop tools for
creating digital collages.
ACTIVITIES: Each day we cover a combination of digital
tools for collage and layering using Photos hop. We
review methods for preparing and coating alternative
substrates, transfer mediums, and integrating images
with text and mixed media. Direct group instruction and
individual discussions are balanced with ample studio
time.
FACULTY: Benjamin Timpson received his M.F.A.
from Indiana University and is the Studio Coordinator
of Photography & New Media at Anderson Ranch. He
exhibits nationally and internationally and specializes
in interdisciplinary mediums, including photography,
painting and sculpture. Recent exhibitions include the
Allegany National Photography Exhibition, Alternative
Processes at the SE Center for Photography in Greenville,
S.C., and The Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort
Collins, Colo.

Define a signature photographic style that
makes your photographs immediately recognizable
by perfecting the art of composition, light and color. In
this fun and immersive workshop, we create unique
photographs that are infused with powerful beauty
and emotion. Through presentations, daily photographic
excursions and in-depth reviews of images, students
craft an individual style resulting in photographs with a
distinct look. Whether you’re interested in landscapes,
portraits, photojournalism, travel or still lives, this
workshop takes your photographs to the next level by
establishing your individual style.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students use DSLR or
mirrorless cameras or iPhones and Adobe Lightroom.
The focus is primarily on taking new photographs and
then selecting and editing the best images in Lightroom.
Students print a final selection of their work from the
week.
ACTIVITIES: We learn from presentations highlighting
masters of color photography, daily field trips to
photograph, and individual and group discussions. Each
student works on an individual project, either an ongoing
body of work or discovering new pathways.
FACULTY: Wyatt Gallery’s work raises awareness and
funding for communities in need after natural disasters.
His work has been featured in The New Yorker, Esquire,
Condé Nast Traveler, The New York Times, and is in the
collections of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and
the George Eastman House, among others. Wyatt is
represented by Foley Gallery and Redux Pictures in New
York City.

O
Turn your photographs into a page-turner in
this week-long workshop designed for photographers
and artists with a body of work they want to fashion into
a cohesive book. The course is divided into two parts:
editing the sequence of the work and designing the book
itself, and then producing a unique, hand-printed, hand-
bound maquette. Special attention is paid to individual
design elements, printing quality and binding techniques.
Students also engage in lectures and discussion on the
history of photographic books.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: We use Adobe Lightroom,
Photoshop and InDesign to edit images and layout our
books.
ACTIVITIES: The week consists of a combination of
lectures, discussions and demonstrations as well as in
studio time to create a unique final book using one of two
different binding methods.
FACULTY: Matthew Monteith earned an M.F.A. from
the Yale School of Art and is the recipient of the Rome
Prize, a Fulbright and a Pollock Krasner fellowship. His
monograph, Czech Eden, was published by Aperture and
his work has been widely exhibited. He is a professor at
Massachusetts College of Art and Design.
