V6 Wood / Soda Kiln : rebuilding the legacy
Doug Casebeer
O
CONCEPT : Explore one of the fundamentals of ceramics , the V6 kiln , and then build the next generation of this kiln , the V8 . During this two-week workshop , we develop the skill set necessary to construct a multiple fuel kiln . We discuss issues of design , fabrication and firing of wood and gas kilns . Participants gain a thorough understanding of kiln firing processes and atmospheric dynamics . Apply your ceramic skills by designing , building and making pots , and then fire a new kiln .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students learn to cut , stack and build a brick kiln . We use stoneware clays , glazes and slips . The new V8 kiln is built from hard and soft bricks with a steel frame . Students can use throwing or hand building methods to make pottery to fire in the kiln .
ACTIVITIES : We start the day with morning pottery demonstrations and then move on to afternoon kiln building sessions . There are lectures and discussions on kiln design and construction . Students partake in oneon-one instruction and enjoy plenty of time for personal practice and studio time .

Playful Prototyping : digital fabrication in clay
Brooks Oliver
II III
CONCEPT : Combine modern technology with age-old ceramics practices in a fun and lively workshop designed to be a playful exploration in developing forms with the help of digital tools . With the aid of 3-D printers and the CNC mill , students create prototypes for slip casting and press molding clay . We examine how these new innovative technologies can be an extension of our hands and how they inform process and influence design . You are encouraged to play and experiment with these tools in order to expand your own visual language .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We explore beginning and intermediate computer-aided design ( CAD ), focusing predominantly on Rhino 3D , the CNC milling machine and 3-D printing for generating prototypes using blue foam and PLA filament . Students make plaster molds for slip casting and press molding . We use cone 10 clays for firing in oxidation and reduction .
ACTIVITIES : Each day includes demonstrations focused around software and digital fabrication techniques followed by hands-on work with machines , plaster and clay .
FACULTY : Brooks Oliver is a ceramics instructor and program coordinator at the University of North Texas and a studio artist based out of Dallas , Texas . He received his M . F .
