The American Bison The American Bison, also known as the American buffalo, is a North American species of bison that once roamed the grasslands of North America in massive herds, but be- came nearly extinct by a combination of com- mercial hunting and slaughter in the 19th century and introduction of bovine diseases from domestic cattle. It has made a recent resurgence largely restricted to a few national parks and reserves. They can be found in Custer State Park and Wind Cave National Park, where they roam freely. Bison are dangerous and should not be approached.
