If you want to catch lots of big trout, measured in
pounds, not inches, then Canada’s Northwest Ter-
ritories has the best fishing on the planet. Period.
Believe me, I was the largest outfitter there for
many years, and have fished all over the world. It
doesn’t get any better than this. And no, the
scenery doesn’t rival Alaska or Chile, and the
lodge is simple, and the cuisine is home cooking,
not cuisine. But from a straight fishing stand-
point, this is as good as it gets. The trout are rela-
tively shallow here all summer long, and the
weather is normally cool and breezy. It is rugged
country, inhabited by caribou, grizzlies, wolves,
and muskox. Whether catching them on fly
equipment (think big streamers, the biggest you
can tie), or baitcasting or spinning gear, these fish
will test your tackle to its limits, and your arms
will ache at the end of the day. Huge grayling in
this country as well. Price includes all meals,
lodging (comfortable cabins), guiding (2 anglers
per boat) roundtrip airfare from Yellowknife to
