ARMSTRONG
A picturesque 250 km (155 mi) drive north of Thunder Bay will
take you to the community of Armstrong. The town is located
northwest of incredible Lake Nipigon and is road accessible
via Highway 527, by charter aircraft in the Armstrong Airport
or by VIA Rail Canada. Armstrong is the base for many fly-in
fishing and hunting outfitters who offer remote cabins on lakes
in Wabakimi Provincial Park and the many lakes and rivers north
of town. Armstrong is also a starting off point for canoeists
wanting to paddle in Wabakimi or one of the many rivers such
as Brightsand, Kopka, and Albany.
Visitors to Armstrong can take advantage of the many outdoor
recreational opportunities that a true boreal forest community
offers. Swim, hike, view wildlife and you may get a glimpse of
the Aurora Borealis which frequently shows up in the night sky.
The adjacent Whitesand First Nation gives Armstrong strong
historical roots related to traditions and customs of the local
Ojibway people who have lived in the area for centuries.
