Checklist for a Successful Hunting
Trip in Sunset Country
If you’ve never hunted in Ontario’s Sunset
Country and you’ve now booked your
trip, then here’s a checklist of things to
remember and plan for to ensure you’ll
have a great time:
Item # 1 – Registering Your Firearm
During hunting season, there’s usually
no issues bringing your weapon(s) of
choice with you but remember that you
are required to register your firearm with
Canada Customs. This involves paying a
registration fee and filling out Canadian
Firearms Declaration Form. Please fill out
the form beforehand.
Item # 2 - Ammunition
You are allowed to bring in up to 200
rounds of ammunition into Ontario with
you. The ammunition should be stored
separately or locked up. It can be stored in
the same locked container as the firearms.
Item # 3 – Transporting Firearms
Your firearms must be properly encased
and a secure locking device, such as
a trigger lock or cable lock, should be
attached so the firearms cannot be fired.
Item # 4 – Prohibited Weapons
Never bring a prohibited weapon such as
a handgun, modified rifle or automatic
weapon into Canada.
Item # 5 – Places to Get Answers
to Your Questions
For more information on importing your
firearms into Canada, you can contact
the Canadian Firearms Centre at 1-800-
731-4000 or (506) 624-5380. You can
download the firearm registration form at
www.rcmp.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/information/
visit/index-eng.htm
Item # 6 – Have Fun!
Following Items 1 through 5 on this
checklist will ensure that you have
a completely hassle-free experience
bringing your guns into Canada. What
awaits you is some of the wildest
landscapes you’ll ever experience and
perhaps, the animal of a lifetime!
