2018 National Prevention Week
Planning Guide and Resource Calendar
A centerpiece product for NPW is the annual calendar, which was re-
envisioned this year as the 2018 National Prevention Week Planning Guide
and Resource Calendar.
As in previous years, the calendar introduces the user to health observances
and provides information on prevention and mental health resources. This
year, SAMHSA elevated the calendar’s functionality as a planning tool by
integrating quarterly checklists to support preparation for NPW, as well as
designing space for taking notes when inspiration strikes. An explanation of
this year’s Prevention Challenge, #DearFutureMe, includes one page for the
user to write a #DearFutureMe letter and another for them to share with a
friend or family for their own letter or picture. With a new standing format to
keep the product visible on desk space, as well as engaging photos featuring
diverse populations and actual NPW activities and participants, the 2018
NPW Planning Guide and Resource Calendar serves as a valuable tool for
not only planning NPW events but also keeping a focus on prevention for the
other 51 weeks of the year.
The calendar was downloaded from the SAMHSA Store 111 times between
December 2017 and June 2018, and more than 5,800 hard copies (out of
6,000 printed) were distributed at events such as SAMHSA’s Prevention Day
or through individual requests to SAMHSA. Additionally, the calendar was
honored with a National Association of Government Communicators (NAGC)
2018 Blue Pencil and Gold Screen Award, 2nd place in the Calendar category,
and recognized as the April 2018 Strategic Communications Plan (SCP) of the
Month by the ASPA SCP team.
