Paleo Diet
by Edie Vlooswyk
The Paleo diet is based
on how our ancestors
ate.
Followers of
this diet eat food in
its original state, how
foods look in nature.
That means saying “no”
to processed foods -
anything found in the
middle of the grocery
store, usually in brightly
colored packaging. fatty acids needed for production of hormones,
healthy skin and transportation of vitamins A,D,E
and K. Carbohydrates are an important energy
source for working muscles, the brain and nervous
tissue. The high protein is essential in building and
repairing muscles tendons and ligaments.
Our ancestors were without some of the modern
diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and
obesity. Today one can improve their health without
calorie counting by eating closer to this form of
“clean eating.” This means that your daily diet will
primarily consist of meat and fish, plenty of fresh
fruits and vegetables, and nuts and seeds. Oils
are also typically allowed in moderation. Foods to
be avoided include dairy products, cereal grains,
legumes, starchy vegetables, fatty meats, sugar,
soy, alcohol, white potatoes, and foods that are
very high in salt content (such as processed meat
products and salted nuts). If you are committed to your health, the Paleo diet
allows you to savor flavorful foods in a natural way.
With commitment, the change to following Paleo
guidelines can be achieved. I don’t promise it will
be easy - but it will be worth it.
I find that a lot of my clients enjoy comfort meals
like the Mango chicken with coconut cauliflower
rice recipe by Bodybuilding.com. This recipe is high
in calories, fat, carbs and protein, but that makes
this recipe a fabulous post-workout meal for proper
muscle repair. It is high in fat, which provides the
31.
Most of us would benefit from eating Paleo, food
closer to its natural state and dense in nutrients.
Those in the bodybuilding industry would also
benefit due to the high protein, fibrous vegetables
and Omega 3’s.
