2018 Miniature Horse World Magazine FALL- Volume 34, Number 6 | Page 8

president’s message by Joe Kahre D oing the business of AMHA requires a tremendous amount of motivation. There are indeed days that have been willed more motivation than others, however, the bottom line is that it takes motivation to get things done. Pretty much any form of forward motion towards success has motivation at some level involved. Sometimes you have to dig deep. Sometimes it presents itself to you in abundance. Where does this motivation come from? Something has to stir it up and put you into action. Where AMHA is concerned my motivation starts pretty pure and simple. I love the Miniature Horse, who it is, what it is, what it represents, its heart, and most importantly its people. I have great respect for the history and development of the AMHA horse and the paths taken to get us where we are today. I love pedigrees, and I enjoy studying how breeders have worked striving to create what they see as a “perfect” Miniature horse. All of this being motivation for me as an individual, as a member to jump in and work to make sure that our association stays strong and develops into the most it can be for our people and their horses. Recently I have had the experience of talking to and working with a 4-H Miniature Horse Group. Seeing the excitement of the kids, watching their parents sponge in all they could learn and having interest and questions regarding the AMHA horse, was all motivation for me. I am left wishing there was more I could do, and wishing that everyone had, or took the opportunity to reach out to an untapped source of excitement for us. More is planned down the road with this group of kids for sure. 6 Miniature Horse World FA L L 2 018 Working with a neighbor girl and watching her bloom in her love for the minis has been a great motivation. Seeing her successes, the support of her parents, and building a great friendship with them as well demonstrates a big “why” for all we do. This is their first year showing, and you will be able to meet them at Worlds! Another piece in the puzzle of why we have NO exception but to work hard and keep the association in a forward pattern. It is often asked of me what does AMHA do for “me”? Well, it offers you a place to register your horses with an accurate accounting of pedigree which brings value to your horses. It provides a staff to work for you in taking care of all the business and answering a plethora of questions. It gives you an avenue to show and display your horses. It houses and holds all your records of your horses. It offers educational opportunities for the public to be exposed to your horses. It gives you to a vast exposure to meet and work with new friends from all corners of the world holding fast to the same passions that you otherwise would not have met. People who become priceless lifelong friends, mentors, colleagues. Recently I was in consultation with a dear friend (whom I have met through Miniatures) about how I was hoping for everything at the World Show to be perfect, that the numbers would be up, the entries would be up, more people there enjoying this great opportunity, and in general fretting over all of the above. She wisely said to me “there are all these people in the membership, you are only one person, one member and the success of a show, association ALSO lies at their feet as well.” As your president I work hard to display leadership and make sure everything is all that it can be…..but that isn’t enough. We need each of you to do your part in making it a success. So, I will flip this around now and ask what are YOU as a member doing to support and help the growth, development, and stronghold of AMHA? Here are a few suggestions, some are simple, easy and very basic but go a LONG way as far as doing your part is concerned. 1. R egister your foals! I cannot emphasize this strongly enough. 2. D o NOT allow yourself to get caught up in any negative spin that has been fabricated, or rooted at an unqualified source. This can be detrimental to all of our well beings. Please avoid this kind of nonsense. 9. B e able to identify the difference between a rumor and the truth, and when you do not know PLEASE go to a knowledgeable source on the topic that has been put into question. 10.
