These states are now generating strong growth in mining production and exports as a direct consequence of the previous resources investment boom, boosting Gross State Product (GSP). However, growth in State Final Demand (SFD), the sum of household consumption, government consumption and investment – (both public and private) has been very weak or negative in recent years. This is important, as growth in SFD tends to be a greater driver of growth in employment and incomes than growth in capital-intensive mining exports. 17
