This salute to the great Scandinavian composers is led by Norwegian conductor Rune Bergmann in his BSO debut . The ever-popular Finlandia is Sibelius ’ ode to independence . Grieg ’ s Piano Concerto spotlights exciting keyboard virtuosity . Nielsen ’ s dramatic Fourth Symphony , " The Inextinguishable ," reflects the battles of war and features an epic standoff between two timpanists playing on opposite sides of the stage .

SIBELIUS VIOLIN CONCERTO
Principal Guest Conductor Markus Stenz conducts an eclectic program including the beautiful Siegfried Idyll that Richard Wagner wrote for his wife , Cosima . In response to failing his violin audition with the Vienna Philharmonic , Sibelius composed one of the most technically challenging violin concertos ever written . Latvian violinist Baiba Skride is up to the task and joins the BSO for the performance of the Sibelius Violin Concerto . Haydn ’ s Symphony No . 104 , " London ," is the composer ' s most regal symphony , filled with the sounds of trumpets and timpani .

LISZT PIANO CONCERTO NO . 1
Pianist Conrad Tao returns to the BSO to perform Liszt ’ s breathtaking First Piano Concerto . Conductor Mario Venzago leads the Orchestra in two of Berlioz ’ s dazzling overtures , Le corsaire and Le carnival romain , capturing the colors and excitement of the Carnival season in Rome . The program also includes two of Ravel ’ s favorite showpieces , Rhapsodie espagnole , which ranges from sultry evocations of Spanish nights to vivid daylight fiestas , and the hypnotic Bolero , a kaleidoscope of different orchestral colors that build to a thrilling conclusion .
