Calling all Sibelius fans! The composer's final symphonies,
No. 6 and No. 7, are led by one of the world’s consummate
Sibelius interpreters, Finnish conductor Hannu Lintu. The
Sixth is delicately beautiful and mysterious, and the Seventh
features one of the most powerful endings in classical
music. Norwegian trumpet virtuoso Tine Thing Helseth joins
the BSO for a stunning showpiece, the Hummel Trumpet
Concerto, as well as the North American premiere of
Penderecki’s Concertino for Trumpet and Orchestra. Marin Alsop conducts Messiaen’s Turangalîla-symphonie, one of the most
innovative works of the 20th century. The title comes from two Sanskrit
words: "turanga" means movement and rhythm, and "Lîla" refers to a cosmic
game. The range of colors and moods in this exotic work, including more
than 100 instruments, features a dazzling, concerto-like part for piano,
played by world-renowned pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and another
for the eerie keyboard instrument ondes Martenot with its otherworldly
sci-fi sounds. This mind-blowing work takes listeners on a journey of extreme
dynamic contrasts, from sensuous whispers to almost deafening force.

This all-American program features two composers of
today alongside Aaron Copland, the dean of American
composers. Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man is
featured prominently in the finale of his Third Symphony.
The New Yorker called composer Andrew Norman “the
master of a uniquely dazzling and mercurial style.” Inspired
by the car-racing video game Gran Turismo, Norman’s
work is a workout for eight violinists. Influenced by Bach's
Brandenburg Concertos, Kevin Puts' Oboe Concerto, a BSO
commission, shines the spotlight on BSO Principal Oboe
Katherine Needleman.
