For your own safety, please take the time to read this document prior to the event. Information about the course: • Large sections of the Rail Trail are shaded, but the Walkway is in full sun. • First aid/medical tents are located at 2 mile intervals along the Rail Trail in proximity to water stations. • The course is narrow and may be congested in areas, so be mindful of other runners. • In the unlikely event of a major emergency, please follow instructions and do not wander off on your own. There is a communications system in place to ensure that all participants are safely accounted for. Medical tents & First Aid stations: • The Medical tent, located at the start/finish area, is equipped to provide acute emergency care to participants. Separate areas will be designated for physical or massage therapy. • The eight (8) First Aid stations will provide basic first aid and are identified by a red cross. • Fluids, Tylenol, Vaseline and basic first aid supplies will be available at medical tents and first aid stations. How to prepare: • Even seasoned runners can be adversely impacted by high temperature and humidity, so be prepared for the possibility of heat-related illness, exertional heat stroke and hyponatremia. • Be aware of weather conditions in Poughkeepsie during the days preceding the marathon, and acclimatize yourself to similar environmental conditions. • Weigh yourself before and after training sessions to estimate your fluid loss under different conditions, so you can hydrate appropriately prior to the race. Excessive hydration can cause hyponatremia, a potentially life-threatening condition. WALKWAY MARATHON IN PARTNERSHIP WITH DUTCHESS COUNTY GOVERNMENT
