Welcome participants to the 2017 Dutchess County Walkway Marathon. It is an event in which runners of all abilities can aim for their personal best while enjoying the scenic Hudson Valley. The Dutchess County Department of Behavioral and Community Health is thrilled to be participating in this event. We are responsible for the healthcare needs for all runners, spectators, and marathon staff during this event. Medical assistance will be available throughout the course at regular intervals in proximity to water stations. First Aid Stations will be equipped to provide basic first aid and coordinate emergency care for participants and spectators as needed. The Medical Tent, located at the start/finish area, will be staffed by experienced emergency medical personnel who are affiliated with local hospitals and ambulance services. We want all participants to have a wonderful experience and stay healthy for the duration of the race. For your own safety, please note the following: • Be aware of weather conditions in Poughkeepsie during the day of the marathon and wear appropriate light, loose-mesh clothing, and footwear. • Weigh yourself before and after training sessions to estimate your fluid loss under different conditions, so you can hydrate appropriately prior to, during, and after the race. Please note that excessive hydration with plain water can cause hyponatremia, a potentially life-threatening condition. • If you feel ill or have recently been ill with fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or chest discomfort, you should consider withdrawing from the race. • If you have any concerns, please consult with medical staff on site prior to the start of the race. The event organizers and staff join me in wishing you a wonderful experience on this year’s Walkway Marathon, and we hope to see you again next year! With regards, A.K. Vaidaian, M.D., M.P.H.
