The Gaze : the figure in clay
Ashley Lyon
SKILL LEVEL : Open to All
CONCEPT : Bring your ceramic craft to life in this hand building workshop that focuses on making figurative ceramic sculptures and hyper-realistic representational ceramic objects using the coil-building method . We explore using clay as a primary material , examining forms of realism and gaze ( e . g ., digital , external , internal , personal , political , isolated , desired , curious , gendered , filtered ). Readings , discussions , class lectures and exercises cover contemporary figurative artists as well as conceptual approaches to making and looking in regard to realism and the figure .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Large-scale coil building and alternative cold surfacing are demonstrated .
ACTIVITIES : Students learn from hand building demonstrations , readings and discussions , lectures and slide presentations of related contemporary artists . We also make flexible silicon molds , press molding , and use cold ( alternative ) surfaces on ceramics .
FACULTY : Ashley Lyon received an M . F . A . in Sculpture + Extended Media at Virginia Commonwealth University . Her work is shown nationally and internationally . Ashley was the Turner Teaching Fellow in Ceramics at Alfred University from 2012 to 2015 , and is currently an Assistant Professor of Ceramics at New Jersey City University .

Under Pressure ! hydraulic press forming steel
Vivian Beer
SKILL LEVEL : III
CONCEPT : Bend , collapse , move and arch steel with grace in this five-day intensive workshop . Our main activities center on a Dake 25-ton hydraulic press . Using this powerful force , students design dies that efficiently and easily cold-form thick steel plate and hot-form even thicker plate . The course focuses on technique , the potential of this machine , and our ability to customize it to our imagination . Compound curves and the natural forms that are inherently developed in hot manipulation of metal are empathetic to our own form .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We explore die design and fabrication , as well as safety and efficient use of the Dake 25 ton hydraulic press . Students also engage in steel sheet and plate forming hot pressing textures , simple hot forming of heavy stock materials , and steel fabrication using MIG , TIG , plasma cutter , torch cutting and welding .
ACTIVITIES : We begin with basic shapes such as saddle , sphere , cylinder , and work toward more challenging techniques , including hot pressed textures and forming . Demonstrations include safe operation of the press , die design and development , metal fabrication ( welding , grinding , cutting ), jig and fixture development , top tool use , and more .
FACULTY : Vivian Beer is a designer and maker working in New England . Her collections include the Smithsonian ’ s Renwick Gallery , MFA Boston , Museum of Art and Design and the Brooklyn Museum , and public art for Arlington , Va ., and Cambridge , Mass . Vivian holds an M . F . A . from Cranbrook Academy of Art and was a Resident Artist at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum , SUNY Purchase , SDSU and Penland School in North Carolina .

Integrating Mixed Media : stone & steel
Carl Reed
SKILL LEVEL : Open to All
CONCEPT : Expect the unexpected in this exciting workshop that explores the incredible results which occur when disparate materials and processes are combined . Sculpture often consists of one material and the techniques for working with that material typically influence a sculpture ’ s form and character . Stone is hard and dense while steel can become plastic and form delicate lines in space when heated . The reductive process of carving stone is very different from the endless adding and subtracting that is possible when cutting and welding steel . Short exercises in the first week allow each student to understand basic techniques , to discover which materials and procedures are most attractive .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Various stones are available , ranging from soft , easily worked soapstone to marble and hard granite . Steel has the capacity to incorporate negative space and to appear heavy or delicate . We explore a variety of techniques to shape and combine materials .
ACTIVITIES : This workshop includes slide presentations and demonstrations that introduce students to concepts and techniques of stone carving and metal work . Particular attention is placed on the variety of ways to combine materials successfully .
FACULTY : Carl Reed is a Professor Emeritus of Art at Colorado College . He continues to teach part-time there and maintains an active sculpture practice . He has exhibited widely in solo and group gallery shows , in both the U . S . and in Sweden , and is represented by the Robischon Gallery in Denver , Colo . Carl has installed numerous public sculpture and design projects , most notably ones that integrate sculpture with landscape and public gathering .
