CONCEPT : Craft an elegant and intriguing piece of furniture , and learn the basics of the craft by examining Velda ’ s Arm Chair . Designed by Curtis Buchanan , this showstopping piece combines traditional Windsor construction techniques with a contemporary look . Hickory sapwood spindles contrast with the walnut ( or cherry ) crest and turnings . Butternut is soft and light , making a perfect seat . This is a rare and exciting opportunity to build a chair of this complexity in a workshop setting . In addition to the chair , each student takes home a shaving horse , built by the class using small-scale production techniques .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We primarily use hand tools for the chair making , with the exception of the lathe , band saw and cordless drill . Emphasis is on learning techniques that allow you to build more chairs at home . We use sawn lumber in this class , excepting the riven spindles and crest .
ACTIVITIES : Students shave spindles from riven hickory using a drawknife and shaving horse . We then steam bend spindles and crest . We turn legs from sawn walnut or cherry , and carve a butternut seat with hand tools . Finally , we assemble the chair using wet / dry joinery techniques , and apply shellac if time permits . We also make a shaving horse using small-scale production techniques .
FACULTY : Elia Bizzarri rives , hews , shaves and turns elegant Windsor chairs in his central North Carolina workshop using traditional tools and techniques . Since 2002 , he has built Windsor chairs and taught chairmaking full-time . Elia regularly teaches at Roy Underhill ’ s The Woodwright ’ s School as well as other schools around the country .
