CONCEPT : Dive into the fascinating world of multiples and gain valuable knowledge from a master in wood working during this fun and dynamic introductory course . Pattern routing is a technique by which multiple , and , essentially identical , elements can be made and then used in a particular piece or as a method of production . Throughout the course , we focus on creating a stool or bench with organic shaped legs .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students begin by making a pattern out of medium-density fibreboard ( MDF ) and using it to produce solid wood blanks with bandsaws and routers . We contour these by hand using draw knives , planes , shokeshaves , files and other tools , resulting in essentially identical contoured legs .
ACTIVITIES : We look at examples of work using this technique and then draw our designs in full scale . There are demonstrations and instructions of the various tools used to achieve the desired result as well as the joinery necessary to attach them together
FACULTY : Michael Puryear , a self-taught furniture designer and maker , has been practicing his craft for more than 35 years . The Museum of Art and Design , the Mint Museum and the Peabody Essex are among the museums that have exhibited his work . His work has also been published extensively , including in Furniture with Soul by David Savage and Makers : An Anthology of American Studio Craft . Michael has taught at the top craft schools and institutions around the country , including Penland , Haystack , Anderson Ranch , the Parsons School of Design , and was Associate Professor of Woodwork at the State University of New York , Purchase for 13 years .

CONCEPT : Take a closer look at and learn how to apply a definitive and intriguing property of wood — pliability . We experiment directly with the material , applying moisture , heat or both to stimulate creativity and generate ideas . Students bend , twist and weave wood to achieve unique organic lines and forms in an engaging course that highlights endless possibilities . The final result or project may be a vase , a tray , a basket , a lampshade , a component of furniture or an absolute sculpture , all of which cater to the primary goal of this workshop : to free your creativity .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Using reed , wood veneer or small-dimensioned wood , we explore means to bend , twist and weave . We encourage an intuitive approach to design . Form and mold making and coopering techniques are introduced to advance woodworking experience .
ACTIVITIES : Participants begin interacting with materials as soon as the workshop starts . Minimum time is spent with a pencil or a computer . Demonstrations , studio practice and individual consultation take place daily .
FACULTY : Yuri Kobayashi is a sculptor and furniture maker who trained in traditional woodworking in Japan . She holds an M . F . A . in furniture design and woodworking from San Diego State University . For many years , Yuri has served as a part-time faculty member in the furniture design program at the Rhode Island School of Design .

SKILL LEVEL : II
CONCEPT : Explore the various aspects of furniture design that are collapsible and versatile using classical campaign furniture and modern camp / knock-down designs as your vehicle . We look at different approaches to designing cases of drawers , tables , beds and more , and we investigate different joinery techniques . Each student designs and builds a piece of furniture that can be assembled or disassembled elegantly and efficiently , using shop-made wood hardware , or standard and innovative metal hardware that is obtained separately . Take your craft to the next level , and build a beautiful piece of furniture in this lively , comprehensive workshop that looks at many facets of furniture making .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We design our project using paper and pencil , cardboard mockups or both . Students who wish to use CAD programs are welcome to do so . We practice the construction of a simple wooden wedge technique and learn to install some common metal hardware .
ACTIVITIES : There are instructional demos and presentations on design approaches such as stackable , articulated and modular furniture . Students learn a few fabrication techniques involving wood-to-wood knockdown joinery , and tried-and-true screws , bolts and other traditional and innovative metal fasteners .
FACULTY : Yoav S . Liberman ’ s pieces have been featured in several woodworking books and have been displayed in museums and exhibitions in both the U . S . and abroad . He has a degree in architecture and completed two competitive residency programs at the Worcester Center for Crafts in Massachusetts and the Windgate Foundation Fellowship at Purchase College .
