CONCEPT : Learn how to create magical forms carved in wood from masters of the craft . Niki Haas of the Haas Brothers joins his mentor and father , Berthold Haas , in a dynamic workshop in which students learn to assemble wood forms in a style similar to works seen in the Haas Brothers ’ studio . Niki , Berthold and Jose Ferreira guide you through carving techniques that can be used to create your own work .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students are mentored on developing a concept into a finished work . We explore various techniques from hammer and gouges to power tool processes , including grinding , finishing and polishing .
ACTIVITIES : This workshop is augmented by philosophical engagements about the meaning and structure of form . Students engage in lectures , discussions and films about the fascinating tradition of wood carving throughout the week .
FACULTY : Berthold Haas was born and raised in the Black Forest , Germany . He learned stone carving , sculpting and bronze casting as an apprentice for his sculptor father as well as getting his B . F . A . in painting at the Academy of Fine Arts , West Berlin .
Niki and his brother Simon are widely known as the Haas Brothers , an artist and designer duo based in Los Angeles , Calif . The Haas Brothers explore aesthetic and formal themes related to nature , science fiction , sexuality , psychedelia and color theory .

CONCEPT : Foster your woodworking skills and stimulate new ideas while looking through the lens of Sam Maloof ’ s iconic career and legacy . In this workshop , we explore the subtle evolution of Maloof ’ s design with regard to wood selection , form , function and edge detail . Students are guided through the design and construction process of creating a chair , applying the Maloof aesthetic to their own designs . Hands-on studio time provides exposure to basic woodworking techniques that include layout , joinery , shaping and finishing . This workshop culminates in a finished product and a deeper appreciation of Sam Maloof ’ s contribution to the woodworking communities .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We begin by converting sketches into working drawings . From there , we go on to work with kiln-dried lumber and air-dried lumber using hand and power tools to complete our creative efforts .
ACTIVITIES : We view presentations of Maloof ’ s work and discuss the evolution of his aesthetic language and the development of his construction techniques . Daily demonstrations cover the essential processes for constructing and finishing a simple side chair .
FACULTY : Larry White ’ s art career spans nearly 45 years . Although primarily known as a skilled craftsman who assisted Sam Maloof for 28 years , he is also renowned as a versatile artist working and exhibiting in other disciplines , including ceramic sculpture , mixed media , drawing and painting . Larry has taught in the art departments of two California universities .

CONCEPT : Learn the basics of 3-D modeling , then design and create a flat-pack chair in just one week in a comprehensive introductory workshop that provides an excellent foundation for digital furniture design . Using 3-D modeling and basic design and fabrication concepts , we make a flat-pack chair with friction-fit joinery . Focusing on using flat-sheet materials like plywood or medium-density fibreboard ( MDF ), students cover the rudiments of designing multiple-piece structures that can slot together . We utilize basic 3-D modeling software and work with the CNC router . Each student designs a unique chair to be CNC-cut from plywood and assembled without fasteners or glue .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Hand sketching is done early in the design process , after which we learn basic 3-D modeling in Fusion 360 , a free , cross-platform , professional 3-D modeling app . We make chairs from plywood or medium-density fibreboard ( MDF ) sheets that are cut on the CNC router .
ACTIVITIES : This workshop begins with a lecture on flat-pack design and history , chair design aesthetics , ergonomics and furniture proportions , chair structure and 2.5-D CNC joinery . We start by sketching chair concepts and then move onto a 3-D modeling techniques class .
FACULTY : Jonathan Odom is a visiting instructor from San Francisco . His background is in residential architecture , film set design , film animatronics , media art , kinetic sculpture , exhibit design and product design . He is currently a designer in Autodesk ’ s Instructables Design Studio at the Pier 9 Workshop , and also Adjunct Professor of Architecture at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco .
