SKILL LEVEL : Open to All
CONCEPT : Leap from traditional to contemporary in this exploratory workshop that examines the possibilities of Japanese-style water-based woodblock printing . Mokuhanga is a nontoxic process and does not require a press to print . Visually , it has potential for creating both precise and exact marks as well as expressive and painterly impressions . We cover basic techniques such as those used in making traditional Ukiyo-e prints as well as explore other approaches including using a laser cutter . Examinations and discussions about cultural references and ideas relevant to Japanese woodblock printing are also an important component of this workshop . Students go home at the end of the week with a collection of handmade prints .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Participants create multicolor prints using traditional Japanese carving and printing techniques , including a Hangi-to ( carving knife ), hand printing using a baren , and using a traditional kento registration method . Use of the laser cutter is introduced as an alternative to hand carving .
ACTIVITIES : We begin with a demonstration of the entire process from carving to printing . Individual aspects of the process and materials are discussed , such as tools , papers , paper sizing , tool sharpening methods , pigments and more . Conversations and discussions occur throughout the week with ample studio time .
FACULTY : Yoonmi Nam received her M . F . A . from the Rhode Island School of Design . Her work considers crosscultural experience and a sense of transience through prints , installations and drawings . She is Associate Professor of Art at the University of Kansas .

SKILL LEVEL : II - III * Basic Photoshop skills are necessary .
CONCEPT : Create unique , one-of-a-kind monoprints by combining traditional and cutting-edge approaches . We use the Anderson Ranch Fabrication Lab and the Patton Print Shop to examine how laser-cut stencils , blocks and overlays can expand the possibilities of a painterly , playful and multilayered approach to making hand-pulled prints . We move fluidly between digital and analogue processes , exploring and learning how each can inform our printmaking approach and contribute to a flexible , evolving practice of art making .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students use the Fabrication Lab to engrave woodblocks and cut paper stencils that can be combined with hand drawn matrices and marks in the Print Shop . Students who have a laptop with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator should bring it , along with a flash drive ; those without may use available equipment . Although the instructor demonstrates how to prepare images for digital applications , basic Photoshop skills are necessary .
ACTIVITIES : This workshop features hands-on demonstrations in the Fabrication Lab and Print Shop followed by blocks of time to produce creative work . As the workshop proceeds , we shift from quick exercises to individual projects , combining informal discussion and group feedback with personalized instruction and ongoing technical assistance .
FACULTY : Lari Gibbons is an artist who explores new and traditional approaches to printmaking through collaborative , interdisciplinary projects . She is Professor at the University of North Texas and also directs P . R . I . N . T , a nonprofit fine art press . She received an M . F . A . from the University of Nebraska , Lincoln .

SKILL LEVEL : III
CONCEPT : Bend , collapse , move and arch steel with grace in this five-day intensive workshop . Our main activities center on a Dake 25-ton hydraulic press . Using this powerful force , students design dies that efficiently and easily cold-form thick steel plate and hot-form even thicker plate . The course focuses on technique , the potential of this machine , and our ability to customize it to our imagination . Compound curves and the natural forms that are inherently developed in hot manipulation of metal are empathetic to our own form .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We explore die design and fabrication , as well as safety and efficient use of the Dake 25 ton hydraulic press . Students also engage in steel sheet and plate forming hot pressing textures , simple hot forming of heavy stock materials , and steel fabrication using MIG , TIG , plasma cutter , torch cutting and welding .
ACTIVITIES : We begin with basic shapes such as saddle , sphere , cylinder , and work toward more challenging techniques , including hot pressed textures and forming . Demonstrations include safe operation of the press , die design and development , metal fabrication ( welding , grinding , cutting ), jig and fixture development , top tool use , and more .
FACULTY : Vivian Beer is a designer and maker working in New England . Her collections include the Smithsonian ’ s Renwick Gallery , MFA Boston , Museum of Art and Design and the Brooklyn Museum , and public art for Arlington , Va ., and Cambridge , Mass . Vivian holds an M . F . A . from Cranbrook Academy of Art and was a Resident Artist at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum , SUNY Purchase , SDSU and Penland School in North Carolina .
