SKILL LEVEL : II - IV
CONCEPT : Explore new horizons of your ceramic practice in this highly innovative workshop that focuses on the use of digital technology for the creation of ceramic objects . We examine the formal and theoretical applications of this interface between matter and data . While the class is tailored specifically for ceramic sculptors , potters and educators , the processes we cover are applicable to a range of other 3-D media .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We explore beginning and intermediate computer-aided design ( CAD ) and parametric modeling , focusing on the use of Rhino 3D , Grasshopper and the CNC milling machine . Students work with plaster molds for slip casting and press molding , and we get an introduction to 3-D printing and laser cutting .
ACTIVITIES : Each day incorporates software and digital fabrication demonstrations as well as hands-on work with software , machines and ceramic materials . We create individual work articulating the tools and processes presented in the workshop . Students participate in critiques , discussions and selected readings exploring both the technical and theoretical repercussions of digital ceramics .
FACULTY : Del Harrow teaches ceramics and sculpture at Colorado State University . His work has been exhibited recently , at the Denver Art Museum , the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston , Haw Contemporary in Kansas City , Mo ., and Harvey Meadows Gallery . Del received his M . F . A . from Alfred University .

SKILL LEVEL : Open to All
CONCEPT : Explore the art of welding in this processdriven course , designed for artists who want to learn the fundamentals of the craft and broaden their skillsets . Draw , design and cut sections of steel manually or digitally with our CNC plasma cutting machine . This workshop provides artists an opportunity to learn and work with an experienced artist and fabricator on a variety of mild steel fabrication techniques . You are encouraged to experiment and think outside of your normal art making practice , developing an abstract object that provides a generous welding canvas and visual timeline of the learning curve . This workshop provides an excellent platform for a clear and safe understanding of the welding process .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We work with steel rod , angle iron , tube and sheet metal . The fundamentals of TIG and MIG welding are covered as well as oxy-acetylene . Additionally , students use the plasma cutter to create any shape imaginable .
ACTIVITIES : Daily technical demonstrations are complemented by presentations on the history of welding . The instructor is available to assist students , and generous studio time is allocated for experimentation .
FACULTY : John Emerson is an American miscellaneist who spends most of his time in and out of the studio . His work has been exhibited widely in the U . S . Emerson received his M . F . A . from Alfred University in Ceramics , and he is the Studio Coordinator of Sculpture at Anderson Ranch .

SKILL LEVEL : II - III
CONCEPT : Transform your ideas from the digital to the physical world in an engaging workshop that leverages the parametric design tool Grasshopper . Parametric design and digital fabrication represent the blending of the digital and physical , and offer extraordinary new avenues in design and new media . Students use 3-D printing , laser cutting and CNC router to rapidly craft and manifest their designs . Emphasis is on learning and experimentation as students learn Grasshopper , and bring their ideas to life with the newest innovations in technology .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students participate in lessons on basic CAD drawing , modeling and form finding in Rhino 3D . We also explore parametric design , pattern making and advanced form finding in Grasshopper ; basic algorithmic design with python ; and cutting , printing and milling with digital fabrication tools in plastic , wood and foam .
ACTIVITIES : This class is very hands-on . We have brief introductory lectures on digital fabrication , parametric design , programming and fabrication . Then students participate in participatory workshops to learn and experiment , mixed with one-on-one work time .
FACULTY : Jordan C . Parsons is a technologist whose work attempts to bridge software and hardware . He is always learning and exploring the space between the digital and physical worlds . Jordan is currently the Lead Developer at Iontank where he works on interactive installations and artworks across a variety of media .
