CONCEPT : Unleash the emotional power of color in this five-day course that encourages you to expand your ability to incorporate a unique visual vocabulary into your artistic practice . Van Gogh deeply believed that color expresses something solely in itself . With this in mind , students examine how a distinctive color palette can transform and expand our capacity to create a commanding , visceral presence , tone or atmosphere within a painting . This studio workshop is for painters of all levels who want to expand upon their vision with a focus on the impact and agency of color .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Using the transparent medium of Golden Heavy Body acrylic paints , we experiment with juxtaposing colors and building up surfaces to create evocative forms , mood , atmosphere and singular presence . Students are welcome to focus on class assignments as well as individual projects .
ACTIVITIES : Each day includes hands-on experimentation accompanied by demonstrations , frequent group discussions , one-on-one help , color experiments and critiques . We work on studies from direct observation along with images , sketches and photographs for development into compositions , studies and paintings .
FACULTY : Katherine Alexander is a painter who lives in West Texas . She has had solo exhibitions in New York , Los Angeles , Houston , Marfa , and El Paso , and has participated in group exhibitions throughout the U . S ., Germany , Belgium and Holland . Katherine ’ s work is represented in numerous public and private collections .
SKILL LEVEL : Open to All
CONCEPT : This workshop is designed for two types of artists : the photographer who wants to involve a hand process and the painter who wants to involve digital media . Students are asked to find , deepen and clarify their creative voices using a combination of media . By experimenting with different ways of applying paint , we begin this combination process . The abstract paintings we create serve as the core of the image to follow , guiding us in forming our final image . The course emphasizes investigation , exploration and risk taking through a multimedia approach .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We experiment with different transfers ( DASS , laser , contact paper , direct rubbing ), gluing and adhesive techniques , and using our own source material while beginning to build an image on our painted surfaces . Photographs and photography are an important part of the process , but only one of many components that go into building a successful image . Lastly , we work at improving editing skills and visual literacy . We encourage you to bring and use your own photographs , or use photos taken during the workshop .
ACTIVITIES : We participate in demonstrations of digital imaging and collage techniques , acrylic painting , transfer techniques including direct paper and DASS transfers . We cover the use of transparencies in layering of images , gluing techniques , and the use of different materials to apply the digital image to the painted surface . Image presentations showcase artists using these techniques .
FACULTY : Holly Roberts has exhibited nationally and internationally and published three monographs of her work , including Holly Roberts , Holly Roberts : Works 1989 – 1999 and Holly Roberts : Works 2000-2009 .

CONCEPT : Open up your practice and push yourself to experiment in this highly engaging advanced painting workshop . Driven by risk-taking and chance , students work intuitively within a rigorous conceptual structure on multiple paintings each day . Paintings begin with loose formal or structural parameters and from there , the direction is up to you . Daily group critiques and individual discussions address the formal and conceptual concerns that emerge from this spontaneous way of working and how these ideas can inform each artist ’ s individual painting practice .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students primarily use paint , oil and / or acrylic on canvas . If oil paint is used , you may choose to use a quick-drying medium such as Galkyd or Galkyd Lite . Other materials to be used on canvas are welcome .
ACTIVITIES : Students paint , critique and discuss work every day . Painting continues outside of class .
FACULTY : Allison Miller received her M . F . A . from UCLA .
