Making the Invisible Visible

SKILL LEVEL : II - IV
CONCEPT : Cultivate a cohesive body of work with a distinct visual voice in this week long course , which focuses on photography as a uniquely powerful vehicle for sharing a singular vision . Investigate how the invisible is brought to life with photography by engaging in discussions that address the mysterious and intimate language of symbols , surrogates , iconography and metaphors as means to pursue a heightened visual language . Join us as we delve deeper into the art of photography and explore the personal versus the universal , the constructed versus the found , and how to avoid the pitfalls of stereotype and cliché .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students practice digital photography , digital printmaking and use a digital workflow with Adobe Photoshop .
ACTIVITIES : We participate in daily discussions , written exercises and reviews of work in progress . Individual assignments are designed to help participants hone their abilities , recognize and capture emotional content , and create memorable images . The instructor works individually with students to design an optimal digital printmaking workflow suited to specific working styles and goals .
FACULTY : Cig Harvey ’ s photographs have been widely exhibited and can be found in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts , Houston , the International Museum of Photography and the George Eastman House . Her monograph , You Look At Me Like An Emergency , was published in 2012 . Cig teaches workshops and lectures at institutions around the world .

Fine Art Digital Printmaking

CONCEPT : Develop a comprehensive understanding of fine art digital printmaking in this hands-on course . We explore the latest , cutting-edge tools , including Epson digital printmaking , as well as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom — two elemental aspects of a successful digital printmaking practice . We look at issues like workflow , how to set up a productive working environment and image optimization . If you want to expand your imaging proficiency and learn to create the highest quality photographic prints , this course is one you won ’ t want to miss .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students learn Adobe Photoshop , Adobe Lightroom and digital printmaking . Please bring digital files to work on in class and a large capacity portable hard drive .
ACTIVITIES : The instructor focuses on image optimization and digital workflow using Adobe Photoshop . Presentations on masking , sharpening , color management and output for web and print are included . One-on-one instruction highlights designing an optimal digital printmaking workflow suited to specific working styles and goals .
FACULTY : Gabe Greenberg is a fine art digital printing pioneer . Studying traditional print techniques under Joel Sternfeld , he began experimenting with fine art digital printing , eventually opening Greenberg Editions within the Polaroid 20x24 studio in lower Manhattan . In 2006 , Greenberg Editions moved to a new , larger space on 29th Street in Chelsea . Gabe teaches a course titled “ The Fine Art Digital Portfolio ” at the International Center for Photography and frequently lectures on fine art digital printing .

Croatian Adventure : Dalmatian Coast Journey

CONCEPT : Join Anderson Ranch Artistic Director Andrea Wallace and artist Mia Semingson for a week of personalized photography instruction as we tour Croatia with the nationally recognized tour company Butterfield and Robinson . On the sparkling east shore of the Adriatic Sea lie the emerald islands of the Dalmatian Archipelago . Over 1,000 islands protect the mainland of Croatia and provide an idyllic setting for photography , exploration and adventure . We visit the ancient cities of Split and Dubrovnik , behind whose massive ramparts is a world of striking beauty and fascinating history .
We embark on daily excursions to explore and photograph the cities of Split and Dubrovnik as well as outings to Krka National Park , the island of Hvar and the Unesco site of Mostar , Bosnia . We strike a balance between fieldwork , discussions , new technical and aesthetic material , and the freedom to explore and photograph the region . This workshop focuses on gaining more creative control of your digital camera , understanding the principles of composition , and moving beyond cliché in photography .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Cell phone cameras and point and shoots to Digital SLR ’ s , laptops .
FACULTY : Andrea Wallace is the Artistic Director of Photography and New Media at Anderson Ranch Arts Center . She received her M . F . A . from the University of Colorado , Boulder . She exhibits nationally and internationally with numerous shows throughout the Americas , Europe , China and the Middle East .

Mia Semingson received her M . F . A . from the University of Colorado , Boulder and subsequently taught photography in the Department of Art and Art History there for 11 years . Mia has traveled extensively in Croatia and exhibits her work nationally and internationally .
