Let ’ s Talk : a conversation between form & imagery

SKILL LEVEL : Open to All
CONCEPT : Build a personal vocabulary of imagery and learn how to use your ceramic work as a storytelling agent in this hands-on workshop . Students consider methods of composition of imagery on both the wheel and in hand built ceramic forms . Using humor , politics and personal stories as tools , we create narratives within our work . The instructor introduces some nontraditional ideas about function and methods of storytelling . Students incorporate their own imagery through carving and experimenting on leather-hard clay . We also explore glaze techniques that enhance surfaces .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We work with low-fire terra cotta and mid-range porcelain both on and off the wheel . We use slips , underglazes and glazes that allow us to explore numerous surface techniques , including sgraffito , mishima , simple screen printing and print transfer . Postglaze involves china painting and lustre techniques .
ACTIVITIES : Utilizing a healthy sense of humor and self-exploration , this workshop consists of daily demonstrations , slide presentations and time to work . Project ideas are used to guide our creativity but can be tailored to individual interests .
FACULTY : Kathy King received her M . F . A . in ceramics from the University of Florida , Gainesville . She is an instructor and the Director of Education at the Ceramics Program at Harvard University . She lectures nationally . Kathy is an active consultant for museum curators and conservators who investigate historical ceramic techniques .

Pottery II : jars , lids & spouts

SKILL LEVEL : II - IV
CONCEPT : Delve into pottery ’ s two key characteristics — service and storage . This workshop focuses on the containing , storage and pouring aspects of pottery making . Instructor demonstrations include options for jars , pitchers , teapots and other objects that contain . We discuss a variety of issues potters encounter when producing wares for the kitchen , countertop and pantry . Hone your ceramic skills in this thorough course that covers many of the craft ’ s most important details .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We work with stoneware clays and bisque firing only . Students also use wheel throwing , hand building and press molds .
ACTIVITIES : The course consists of morning and afternoon demonstrations with individual instruction .
FACULTY : Doug Casebeer has been the Artistic Director of Ceramics at Anderson Ranch Arts Center for over 32 years , where he is also the Associate Director . He received his M . F . A . from Alfred University , followed by several years working for the United Nations in Kingston , Jamaica . Doug is a member of the International Academy of Ceramics and travels worldwide to teach , lecture and exhibit his artwork .

Making & Glazing : an exploration of form , process & surface

CONCEPT : Transform the ordinary into amazing in a workshop that takes a closer look at the common questions of personal development . We will on the best surfaces for your work ( textures , slips and glazes ) and new ways to fabricate pots and pottery parts ( form , lids , handles , spouts and feet ). Working together , we discover new techniques for creating all the interesting detail that makes an everyday pot something special .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students engage in wheel throwing and / or hand building activities , along with glaze mixing and testing . We fire kilns at cone 6 oxidation and cone 10 reduction .
ACTIVITIES : We spend our mornings in lectures and discussions as well as time mixing glaze tests . After lunch demonstrations will be followed by work time .
FACULTY : Pete Pinnell has been making pots since he was a student and has taught at the University of Nebraska since 1995 , where he is a professor and former department chair . He is fascinated by everything ceramics : the process , history and aesthetics . Pete has taught , lectured and demonstrated widely , including most recently at the NCECA conference in Kansas City , Mo .
