SKILL LEVEL : Open to All
CONCEPT : Take an in-depth look at the foundation of ceramic sculpture in this contemplative week long workshop that challenges students to take their ceramic storytelling to a new level . We use the figure — whether it be personal , political , social or religious — as the focal point of telling a story . The instructor works with students to help them develop iconography , symbols and forms that are personal and meaningful . We look at the figure as it has been used to chronicle the human condition as a way to speak about distinct cultures .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We use all available ceramic techniques in order to be successful in the construction of our work . We complement this hands-on exploration with discussions and demonstrations about these techniques . Instruction is customized to each student ’ s experience and course objectives .
ACTIVITIES : Students drive the daily focus of the class with suggestions on what they would like the instructor to demonstrate . Once students feel comfortable , they continue their work .
FACULTY : James Tisdale is a figurative artist who has studied abroad and is a recipient of an NEA grant . He has been a resident and visiting artist nationally at Archie Bray and The Philadelphia Clay Studio , and internationally in China and the ICHSU in Hungary . James ’ work has been exhibited internationally and published in various books and periodicals .

CONCEPT : Discover the relationship between surface pattern design and dimensional forms as it relates to the ceramics craft . Whether casting a functional piece or hand building an abstract sculpture , molds are found in most ceramic studios . They can take on many different forms , and be made of many different materials . Plaster has the ability to capture minute details such as lines , marks and textures . In this workshop , the instructors introduce systems of prototyping and mold making .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We explore mold making techniques applicable to tile , vessels , sculpture and beyond . Instructors demonstrate making one- , two- and multi-part slip casting and press molds , as well as modular mold systems . Students explore mixing and pouring plaster and casting slip , plus approaches to press molding with attention to decorative and textural surfaces . We examine high-touch surface options including mishima , sgraffito , applique and embossing .
ACTIVITIES : We engage in daily demonstrations , slide lectures , group discussions and work in the studio .
FACULTY : Giselle Hicks is the Studio Coordinator of Ceramics at Anderson Ranch . She received her M . F . A . from Alfred University . Her work has been exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston , the John Michael Kohler Art Center and the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design .

Kala Stein is an artist and designer noted for innovative mold making and casting techniques . She is the Director of Ceramics at Sonoma Community Center in California . Kala received her B . F . A . from SUNY New Paltz and her M . F . A . from Alfred University .

CONCEPT : Turn your tabletop into a work of art through this exploratory workshop that focuses on crafting bowls , cups and plates . Designed to examine and develop your personal pottery skills , this is a make-only workshop . The instructor presents a variety of practical methods for making pieces on the potter ’ s wheel , extruder and slabs . We complement daily work with discussions and demonstrations that highlight creative ideas for tableware . If you ’ ve always been interested in ceramics , and adding some personal style to your dining table , you won ’ t want to miss this course .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students work with stoneware clays and bisque firing only . We also explore wheel throwing , hand building and press molds .
ACTIVITIES : Each day includes demonstrations , individual instruction and exploration with clay .
FACULTY : Doug Casebeer has been the Artistic Director of Ceramics at Anderson Ranch Arts Center for over 32 years , where he is also the Associate Director . He received his M . F . A . from Alfred University , followed by several years working for the United Nations in Kingston , Jamaica . Doug is a member of the International Academy of Ceramics and travels worldwide to teach , lecture and exhibit his artwork .
