STANSW Physics Teachers Conference
Aaron Cook
Friday 23 June - University of Technology Sydney
A huge thank you to University of Technology for their sponsorship of this event. Also to Australian
Institute of Physics NSW Branch for their support organising the speakers.
The 2017 Physics Conference was held on Friday 23rd of June. The conference had a focus of the new
NESA year 11 syllabus, and was the second conference held in collaboration with the NSW Branch of the
Australian Institute of Physics. NESA Science Inspector, Kerry Sheehan gave a plenary lecture on the
new Physics Syllabus. UTS academics included, Les Kirkup, Danica Solina and Matthew Arnold. Thanks
also to Professor Shirley Alexander, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education and Students) for giving the open
lecture and welcoming delegates to UTS.
There were workshops involving practical work and also unpacking the new syllabus. Teachers were able
to share ideas about teaching the new content whilst programming for next year. Thank you to those who
prepared presentations for the sessions but were unable to attend.
Close to 200 teachers attend this event and many stayed back for happy hour and to discuss their
learning for the day.
Many thanks go to the outstanding presentations by Brett McKay, Simon Crook, Maree Woods, Vatche
Ansourian, Grace Mamo, Alex Bean, Gary Carey (SCS), Elizabeth Angstmann (UNSW), Troy Garrett
(Cube Rider).
