LAND OF GIANTS

The majority of the terrain in Northern Ontario is plated almost entirely by the Canadian Shield . The enormous land mass is compromised mostly of volcanic igneous rock and creates large formations high the above shore line known as cap rocks . The most famous of which is the Sleeping Giant in Thunder Bay which , when viewed from the shore of Lake Superior , looks like a giant lying down .

Exploring Prince Arthur ’ s Landing feels just like being on the coast . Sit and watch the sailboats and freight ships depart with Sleeping Giant dozing on the horizon . The landing incorporates the district ’ s Marina Park , which is equipped with an art gallery , restaurant , splash pad and hiking trails ; all the things you need to enjoy a leisurely day by the largest Great Lake .

AN AERIAL APPROACH

Armstrong is located 3 hours north of Thunder Bay and is northwest of Lake Nipigon . From here , anglers and hunters catch the next bush plane to points north or to Wabakimi Wilderness Park . Said to come from the Ojibway word meaning “ Whitewater ”, Wabakimi and other lakes in the region are great choice for a fly-in fishing vacation or wilderness canoe trip .

NIAGARA OF THE NORTH

Northwestern Ontario is home to some of the most beautiful parks in all of Canada . Many parks feature elaborate natural waterways which contour the grounds to make a truly unique experience . Kakabeka Falls just west of Thunder Bay is nicknamed “ Niagara of the North ”. It drops 40 metres into Precambrian Shield gorge which has some one the oldest fossils known to exist .

ARMSTRONG Located just northwest of Lake Nipigon , Armstrong is a true doorway to the wilderness landscapes of Ontario including spectacular Wabakimi Wilderness Park . KAKABEKA FALLS Easily one of the most picturesque of communities in Sunset Country is Kakabeka Falls . Located on the shores of the mighty Kaministiqua River , the waterfall here is an Ontario Park and is known as the “ Niagara of the North ” in Ontario . During the spring runoff , the rush of water is awe inspiring . You can also stock up on groceries and even stay a night or two in the local hotel . Kakabeka Falls is a great place to get some unique souvenirs from the local shops .

SHEBANDOWAN Located on Highway 11 west of Thunder Bay , Shebandowan is an unincorporated community run by a district services board . Better yet , it is a jumping off point for some great fishing adventures in the area and specifically those on beautiful Shebandowan Lake . This lake offers excellent , bass , walleye and pike fishing .
THUNDER BAY Thunder Bay is located directly on Lake Superior and it has a recently re-developed waterfront that is a must-see !
