editor’s notes
by Melissa Powell
S
pring has sprung. I must share
with you a bit about my soon-
to-be life changing experience.
Maybe it’s the empty nest syndrome
kicking in, or possibly the photos
of new foals scampering across my
computer screen that has renewed
my desire to delve back into horse
breeding. I’m trying my best to be
logical. Counsel from a successful
breeder rings in my ears, “Breed
only your best to your best and
leave the rest open.” Add to that
the sobering advice from experts
who say a homebred foal will cost
in the neighborhood of 10,000 to
$15,000 from conception until their
two-year-old year. As if that didn’t
discourage me, perhaps the huge
responsibility breeders are facing
today gave me, even more, food for
thought. Some say, “It’s no longer
acceptable to breed for profit or to
even breed to produce a sellable
horse. Our mindset for the horse
we produce should be a lifetime
financial commitment.” The reality
of someone coming along and
offering a $10,000 price tag might
convince me otherwise, but with so
many horses “out there” already,
my plan for this horse will be a
home for life. In eleven months and
two weeks, I’m hoping I feel it was
worth the time, money, anxious
About the cover:
There were many choice bits of
information that we were anxious
to reveal in this online issue. But
featuring the accomplishments
of the Mini Hours Awardees was
a must share. This diverse group
of enthusiasts shines a spotlight
on the versatility of the Miniature
horse unlike any other. From
dressage driving, to therapy, to
open showing and everything in
between, most of these little guys
do it all! I encourage anyone who
spends time with an AMHA horse to
become involved in this newly re-
vamped program. Win great prizes
and spend time with your horse? It
sounds like a win, win to me! Find
out more about this program at

As a middle aged association, it
seems we are sadly losing some
of our elder statesmen (and
women) who helped shape the
Miniature breed. Two such people
are featured in this issue and we
would like to know of others as well
that have influenced the lives of
our members and horses. Please
contact me at [email protected]
if there is a person of interest you
feel we should pay tribute to in the
pages of MHW.
Enjoy this glorious springtime!
At DHTC, we believe the horse
comes first. These horses are our
working partners. While ribbons and
trophies are wonderful, they cannot
replace the enjoyment of the animal
itself. They are our first priority at all times.
We specialize in matching client to
equine for the perfect partnership. Our
clientele is compromised of both amateur and youth, with
hundreds of World Champion and Nationals Champion wins to
their credit.
Visit us in picturesque Delaware and we will treat you to a tour
of our state of the art training and boarding facility!
