Amplifying community- based efforts 01 05 04 02 03 Awareness Day 2017 elevated the work of communities across the nation. As in previous years, numerous communities, states, tribes, and territories serving children, youth, and families hosted Awareness Day activities exploring creative ways to support children’s mental health. Some specific examples include: 01 FAIRBANKS, ALASKA: The Fairbanks Native Association, in partnership with the Tanana Chiefs Conference, hosted a screening of Chasing the Dragon, a short film on heroin addiction. The film was followed by an expert panel discussion addressing questions from the audience. 02 EUREKA, CALIFORNIA: The Humboldt County Children’s System of Care/BRIDGES celebrated with proclamations, walks, barbecues, and a family skate day. They also had a “red carpet” theater event showcasing youth videos. 03 8 HAGATNA, GUAM: Para I Famau’on-ta/ICareGuam had a proclamation and a “wacky wave” where staff, partners, and families waved signs displaying positive mental health messages on the sides of busy intersections. They also had an interactive teaching event and an art display. Partnering for Help and Hope 04 UPPER MARLBORO, MARYLAND: The Prince George’s County System of Care and the Prince George’s County Health Department wrote proclamations, had a flash mob, hosted a “walk and play” event, coordinated a family mental health and wellness expo, and developed bookmarks created by children, an informational graphic card, and a fact sheet. 05 LINCOLN, NEBRASKA: The Santee Sioux Tribe Society of Care held a “Turning the Mental Health Stigma Inside Out” movie night that included a community meal, an eagle feather/plume ceremony, and information for participants about setting up a space to go to re-center themselves.
