Awareness Day 2017 elevated the work of communities across the nation. As in previous years, numerous communities, states, tribes,
and territories serving children, youth, and families hosted Awareness Day activities exploring creative ways to support children’s
mental health. Some specific examples include:
01 FAIRBANKS, ALASKA: The Fairbanks Native Association,
in partnership with the Tanana Chiefs Conference, hosted
a screening of Chasing the Dragon, a short film on heroin
addiction. The film was followed by an expert panel
discussion addressing questions from the audience.
02 EUREKA, CALIFORNIA: The Humboldt County Children’s
System of Care/BRIDGES celebrated with proclamations,
walks, barbecues, and a family skate day. They also had a
“red carpet” theater event showcasing youth videos.

proclamation and a “wacky wave” where staff, partners,
and families waved signs displaying positive mental health
messages on the sides of busy intersections. They also had
an interactive teaching event and an art display.

04 UPPER MARLBORO, MARYLAND: The Prince George’s
County System of Care and the Prince George’s County
Health Department wrote proclamations, had a flash
mob, hosted a “walk and play” event, coordinated a
family mental health and wellness expo, and developed
bookmarks created by children, an informational graphic
card, and a fact sheet.
05 LINCOLN, NEBRASKA: The Santee Sioux Tribe Society of
Care held a “Turning the Mental Health Stigma Inside Out”
movie night that included a community meal, an eagle
feather/plume ceremony, and information for participants
about setting up a space to go to re-center themselves.
